First things first, I apologize for making a new thread if you viewed my last thread talking about unlocked 6950's.

In short, I am comparing an Unlocked 6950 2gb, vs 6970 2gb (OC'd).

Would it be more wise to save money, and buy a 2gb 6950 unlocked, or wait 2 months and buy a 6970 2gb on Black Friday?

I know the performance of an unlocked 6950 is the same as a stock 6970, and if you OC the unlocked 6950, you can pass a 6970 by a little bit. But what if the 6970 was OC'd? What kind of performance gain would that be over an unlocked 6950 OC'd?

I searched a bit on the forum so far, and I am searching some more.

What's your BUDGET ?

... because it's already been posted more than once before, that since NewEgg ran out of the Sapphire TOXIC HD-6950's ... they began selling the Sapphire HD-6970 for almost the same price as the higher end 6950's (TOXIC, MSI PE/OC TwinFrozrIII, Asus EAH6950 DCUII)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...apphire%206970 @ $300.00 after MIR {expires Oct 15th}.

Right now it's $270. Enough to buy a 6950.

For reference, if I get a 6950, it will be this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-102-945&SortField=1&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Page=1#scrollFullInfo

Budget might increase by Black Friday, and prices might drop too.

I'm just wondering the performance difference of an Unlocked 6950 that's a bit OC'd, compared to an OC'd 6970.

OK, now we have something to work with and can advise you better ... but first off let's get it out of the way that a HD-6970 "should" always be able to out perform a similar HD-6950, meaning that while yes you can potentially Un-Lock and Over Clock a 6950 card to perform better than a STOCK 6970, you can just as easy then in turn Over Clock the 6970 to surpass the Un-Lock'd/OC'd 6950 ... does that make sense ?

... so now for your Budget range, I'd say PULL the TRIGGER NOW and buy the Sapphire DIRT3 HD-6950 ... while they are still around, and you can still potentially Un-Lock one, and while at least via TIGERDIRECT, as much as I hate to suggest buying from them, but you can get the DIRT3 card w/ THREE FREE games {Dirt3, Deus Ex : HR, and Total War : Shogun 2} for $250.00 w/ MIR (Valid 10/06/2011 - 10/31/2011)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...002&CatId=7005 ... make sure you use the CORRECT link to buy it, there are 2
... use item #A271-6957 which is the DIRT3 card w/ 3 Free Game Combo Pack
... vs item #A271-6956 which is the DIRT3 card w/ DIRT3 game ONLY.

Is TigerDirect very reputable?

I am strongly considering them, not only for the 3 free games, and the $20 rebate, but also Newegg is going to charge me roughly $20 for Tax cause I'm in CA.

Edit: Also, would I have to go through Sapphire if something happens to the card to get a replacement (because I won't have the UPC code on the box). Do they go off of proof of purchase, or serial #?

Yeah I'm in CALI too and had to pay TAX on my TOXIC from NewEgg ... yeah Tiger is LEGIT and almost as good as NewEgg ... I don't really want to recommend them as I've only ordered TWO things from them in the past, ONE of which I got ... the other of which they shipped to the wrong address/state TWICE and I had to fight for a refund finally after 2 months of BS from them ... but others swear by them as strongly as NewEgg, so go figure. I did get my money back finally though.

Also, just like NewEgg I think the first 30 days you go through the Re-Seller (Tiger/NewEgg/Etc.) should you need to RMA it, but after that you'll register your card ONLINE with Sapphire based off serial # if I recall correctly {though it maybe was the UPC ... and I did the online registration before I cut it out to send in for the Rebate ? I know I made a photo copy of the UPC in case I needed it down the road to be safe though } and you'd then deal w/ Sapphire after 30 days.

I would say DO IT ... I love my TOXIC, and I think those that UnLock the DIRT3 card love their cards for the value just as much.

Reading up on that card on TD, I notice it doesn't say anywhere in the description that is has a Dual BIOS.

Should I be worried about that? Amazon has the same card, about the same price, but with no free games, but the description says it has a dual bios and 1 or 2 comments saying they unlocked it.

Nope, I wouldn't ... Sapphire isn't known for playing games with the Product Codes / Versions of their cards, like VisionTek has done recently. IF it says you're getting the DIRT3 Edition Model: #100312-3SR you're getting the DIRT3 Edition card Model: #100312-3SR with the Dual Bios switch, now IF it Un-Locks or not is totally LUCK of the DRAW, and not based on anything Tiger/Egg/or Amazon can do ... or Sapphire really for that matter, as they get what they get from AMD and just put the GPU chip on the PCB card. If I hadn't bought my TOXIC ... THIS is the deal I'd be all up after right now ... Dirt3 Card, maybe UnLocks, Rebate, 3 Free Games, Great Value PRICE ... how can you pass on that ?

2 quick things, TigerDirect is legit but RMA'ing is a hassle sometimes, I used to live in Miami where there HQ is and have to say not as good as NewEgg...

Also I would wait until Black Friday and get the 6970, I got a pair in CF and they rock, I have not over-volted them yet but I am running full overclock, GPU's @ 950Mhz and Memory @1450Mhz with no problems at all... I can tell you with from 3dMark 11 and 3DVantage I saw a big jump in FPS from stock @880Mhz to max OC at 950Mhz, it was more than I thought it would be...

I plan on over-volting them and try for 1 Ghz and higher soon and see how much I can get out of them...

That's the only thing I am still considering.

Whatever I do buy, I will want to crossfire/SLI in the future. I could get a 6950 right now with the possibility of unlocking it, but if I buy another in the future and it doesn't unlock, I will be stuck with 2 6950's instead of 2 6970's.
