Well, Guru3D.com got that same test system to pull 794W from the wall with three GTX 470s in SLI under full load which comes out to be approximately 675W of power being pulled from the PSU. They also recommend adding about 100W to 150W to this to account for the rest of the system which brings us to 775W to 825W. However, if they are talking about adding 100W-150W to the "at the wall" reading, then that results in 760W to 802W.

Either way, a quality 850W power supply is about perfect to power a system that has three GTX 470s in it.

This. If you plan on overclocking them quite a bit, look for something higher like an HX1000.

If you kept the cards at stock and didn't run distributed computing projects or LinX+Furmark simutaneously then, yes.

Still, it's pushing it. I personally don't recommend it.
