Random freezing when gaming

Hi.

My computer randomly freezes when playing games. The only games I've tried are F1 2011 and Minecraft. I noticed the freezing yesterday when I was playing F1. It just randomly froze all USB devices lost power, couldn't do anything. Restarted and kept playing, left the game on the pause menu, came back and noticed keyboard backlight was off, next thing you know is the computer is frozen.

I also played some Minecraft last night and it felt really laggy which it usually does not lag at all. After about 10minutes of playing the whole computer froze and I had to restart.

Just before I was playing F1, paused it for dinner. Came back and it was frozen.

At first I thought it was a problem with F1 but when it happened on Minecraft I knew it wasn't.

After the first time it happened yesterday on F1 I put all overclocks back to stock.

Any ideas?

Just happened again. For a split second the audio stuttered and then all USB lost power and monitor froze. This was while qualifying in F1.

Hey guess what! After I made the above post I went and tried to play some more F1 when next minute I was going down one of the straights on the China track and then woopty doo it froze AGAIN! This is getting a bit annoying. I wonder what is causing this.

Hmm, so its freezing at stock CPU and GPU? Sounds like a Hard Drive problem, if you're Overlcocks are too high that can cause the freezing, but it would normally crash to desktop stopping the display driver, which leads me to believe its your cpu.

I was just thinking it was the HDD. Opened up HDTune. Checked the health of my SSD: algud. Checked the F3: warning. Look for the error... Ultra DMA CRC error count.

A long time ago my RAID with two other drives was corrupt because there was a read issue with one of the drives and I think it was the same error. I just thought it was the drive so I bought the F3. Hmmm perhaps the problem was the motherboard.

EDIT: Just changed what port the F3 is on from 3 to 4 and the error is still there. Perhaps I'll try another sata cable tomorrow.

I tried the F3 in the same port as my SSD but still had errors. Tried a different sata cable, still had errors. Tried the sata cable my SSD is using and the F3 still had the Ultra DMA CRC error.

I have come to conclusion that it must be the HDD that is defective. It's about a year or so old. My mate had the exact same HDD but it caught on fire for no apparent reason a couple of weeks ago. This is the second HDD that has had this problem although the two are of different make and model.

Ah well, that was my initial guess, its a process of elimination when you get problems like that, pick yourself up a decent little HDD or buy 4 for some raid action!

Im thinking motherboard is the issue or maybe psu. I dont think a faulty hard drive would account for all the issues.

Still have these problems. RMA'd my F3 because of the error count. Haven't put the new HDD in yet though. Just tried playing some Minecraft and it just kept freezing up requiring a restart to do anything.

I'm more leaning towards motherboard now? Seen as I have eliminated HDD's as a factor. I don't get blue screens it just straight freezes so no dump I don't think.

Anyone got any ideas on how I can track the problem down?
