Worst idea. I believe IBM would be more the right buyer.

I know that Intel is much bigger than AMD and has more resources to pull from, but really how much bigger is one than the other?

I think 2011 current revenue estimate for intel 2011 is 13 billion and AMD is 1.6 billion. Not sure how true those numbers are was about 2 min of google.

What we see there is 30% more performance in CPU when comparing the 2600K and the 3960X.
Whoops, you're right. 29.6 to be exact, got my numbers mixed up.

I don't see this happening and if it does, it's going to be useless to most people. Most of the benches have x4's beating out the BD in almost everything that most people use their computer for.
This is not true at all. They have said they are going to try and increase IPC next. That should result in better single threaded performance and of course better performance overall.

AMD is not down for the count by any means.

Intel isn't being being targeted by any anti trust lawsuits any time soon at least as long as Obama is president.

Entirely dependent on applications. But in most real-life scenarios, yes. Given the right programming, though, it's entirely possible to make software performance scale up linearly with the number of cores.
