Solid, Heavy duty Desk build

I have been wanting to build a new desk for a while, so I have decided to build one modeled after the ikea vika series, only really heavy duty. Instead of the cheap fiberboard, I want to use a solid oak hardwood for the tabletop.
The oak that is available to me is 4"x6"x8' so the tabletop is going to be around 3" thick, 24-30" deep and 7' long. This is going to be one heavy tabletop, so I had my friend weld up some super heavy duty legs to go with it (5 legs). I want to finish the oak in black then lime it to really show off the grain.

This on steroids

+ a finish that hopefully looks like this

my friend had the legs painted a light metallic silver, but it actually looked like grey primer from a distance. I wanted a rough, industrial look, so we ended up running them through a bead blaster

I gave the legs a once over with a rustoleum clear coat to prevent them from rusting. Ill give them another nice coat during the day when its warmer.

The shop was a little chilly so I gave the legs some heat to help the first coat to dry

Update 5/18/2013 The Oak I was supposed to get was in really bad shape, so I was going to use some extremely strong plank boards used for scaffolding instead. well that fell through as well, so I ended up just building it from douglas fir as I couldn't wait any longer. Unfortunately I was really into the build so I didn't get many pics of the build process.

Originally I was going to just go with a tabletop, but I decided to add a hutch. I added the hutch because I live in an apt. and I didn't want to mess with the walls.

here is the hutch frame before first assembly.

I secured the hutch to the tabletop and legs with 6x 3-1/2" Carriage bolts. The bolts run through the hutch, tabletop, and rear leg flanges

I had to impact the hex nut to sink the carriage bolt into the wood before I could add washers.

Here are the finished corrugated panels. These were a pain to cut. I looked online to find the best way to cut these and I saw a circular saw and reciprocating saw mentioned. I tried using my circular saw with a bi-metal blade first, but it was blowing chunks of metal everywhere and leaving a really jagged edge. I finished the cut with a reciprocating saw but it shook too much and also left a jagged edge. I ended up making the remaining cuts and cleaning up the other cuts with some Wiss tinners snips.

Installed the Lcd mount. I installed it on the left side of the beam as the mount is not centered when folded flat.

Disassembled for a quick sanding

Added the stain. First a coat of Minwax Classic Gray, then another coat of Minwax Jacobean. The finished color isnt as orange as it is in the pics

Here it is set up so far. I still have some work to do.

Nice legs. biggrin.gif

I put one together using a 120"x30"x1 3/4" butchers block from here.

http://www.grizzly.com/products/Solid-Maple-Workbench-Top-120-Wide-x-30-Deep-x-1-3-4-Thick/G9917

and 6 legs from Ikea.

It used to hold up 3 CRTs, two 21"s and a 24". Now with three LCDs, it seems overkill, but I love it. Need three people to move it. biggrin.gif

Updated 2nd post with pics. I didnt get too many pics of the build process so its a weak attempt of a writeup, but I thought Id post what I had anyways. I still have some work to do. I need to add some accent lights, shelves and work on some serious cable management. Ill update as needed. thumb.gif

Looks good, but I must say... With the thickness of the legs and top, you sure did go awfully thin on those flanges. You risk bending the tabs with any sideways load on the table.

I thought the same thing at first and screwed them to a 2x8 to test them. I tried bending the flanges, but the wood it was attached to ended up flexing instead. I hopped up onto the desktop and tried rocking it in all directions, but it was surprisingly stable. I don't ever think I'll ever have enough weight or put enough force on my desk to break it. That being said If I had more built, I would have the front legs welded to the rear with the same 3x3 material. It would have made it easier to brace all the board without having to use crossmembers.
