Good choice or overkill (mobo+cpu)

Thread Starter
Good morning my new found friends, for those who recall, yesterdays day started with me about to buy an AMD CPU + Mobo combo, now with a few pokes in the side with a sharp stick from a couple of members here (a thanks is in order) I am now ready to go blue blue blue. For what its worth, apart from the usual word processing & web browsing, Im primarily gonna be gaming (BF3, Skyrim etc..) & watching HD x264 movies. I have qute a few HDD's that I will be attaching ie normal, USB & SSD. I will use the USB 3.0 ports regularly to charge ipods & ipad etc.. I will also be linking to a secondary HTPC via ethernet

Will this little pair do what I need & be ready for future games etc.. or should/can I set my sites a little lower

Asus P8Z68 Deluxe
i5 2500K

Approx combined price is £350 which is £150 above my original budget based on I had already bought the Crosshair IV + 1090T elsewhere for £200 but have since returned for a full refund as mobo was faulty.

I need to put this to bed now, as Ive still got a headache over the whole thing & last night, Red Vs Blue was all I deamt of lol, how sad is that !

PLEASE NOTE: I already have HD6950 2GB GPU, Corsair 850W PSU, HAF X Case & 4GB RipjawsX 1600 RAM so I need no recomendations for those, thanks again

It is a very good choice indeed. Only recommendation here to make is, if your budget allows it, is to go for 2600K(it will keep you happy in all the years to come .)

Also, is that top end motherboard necessary?, you do not need to spend that much to get good overclocks.

I'd choose a bit more lower end motherboard(such as the V-Pro) and try and get the 2600k.

From what I saw with regards to mobo, although only 1 vid, that the deluxe is more geared for a lot of operations & crossfire/SLI better than the pro because the pro gets "drop outs" whatever that is. If I go Pro + i7 would cost me about £50 more, really pushing my budget further into the red, is it worth compromising on the board for the cpu ?

I really dont know, it seems I know stuff but if u saw me & my red eyes, u would know that Ive been web browsing quite a bit of late lol

In my viewpoint, yes.

The V-pro is not exactly the low end. I think it comes right under deluxe in the p8z68 series. You said you have a 6950, so you probably not going for a Quad CFX in future.
At scan.co.uk, deluxe is £192 and v-pro is £148. Thats the difference of about £42.
I'd certainly go for a 2600K.

The thing is, & Ive got to take everything into consideration, that PC gaming although will probably increase is at 0% currently as I game 99% Xbox360 1% PS3. I can appreciate that the i7 is better than i5 etc.. & Deluxe is better than Pro, however, would it not be wise now whilst budget allows to get the better mobo & upgrade CPU later, maybe even ivy-bridge, as if not, would it not be in my best interest based on current use & fundings to go i5 + Pro ?

You see my dilema, I want the best for me & future but also now & that means my wallet too, its hard, hence why I need HELP!!!!!!!!!! lol

PS: I do plan on crossfire, hopefully by Xmas so not too long to wait for that

I'd say stick with the 2500k for now. By the time games need more then that it will probably be time to upgrade platforms.

As for the mobo I'm not sure how the deluxe is better for xfire/sli, I've never heard of these "drop outs." If you want more details check the intel motherboard sub forum, there's a thread dedicated to the Asus p67/z68 boards. I'm sure someone there could answer any of your questions. You could also go with a p67 board if you don't need on board video or SSD caching, that's all that z68 offers over p67.

My personal opinion would be 2500k + Asus P8P67 PRO. I only say p67 though because I see no need for the z68 features.

cool, thanks, the drop outs were mentions by JJ who is the Asus youtube chap (on a newegg video) I will look at P67 now as I do have SSD but will use as main boot device not cache & dont need onboard video. Thanks for that

I've got the pro and i'll gladly recommend it as soon as soon I can get the thing to work.
Pretty sure it's my fault not the board though.

Once you go PC gaming console will loose a lot of it's luster. I've not touched my Xbox in ages and my PS3 is relegated to a blu-ray player. PC games are a lot cheaper too plus you get mods, user created content etc.
