Athlon II x250 Bottlenecking

Thread Starter
My CPU is an Athlon II x250 OC a bit to 3.2 Ghz

I just got my GTX 460 yesterday and played some games with it.

Here are some to name a few that really got my attention:
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Homefront
Crysis 2
DiRT 3

Okay i use EVGA precision to monitor the GPU usage. And all these games give me around 45% max GPU usage. It never goes over that. Allthough the framerates are acceptable, i just dont like the idea that i could have had even better framerates if i had a better CPU

So it really hit me that my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU.
But what i really dont get is why is it so bad?

I mean 45% max GPU usage only! Is my CPU really that bad that it cannot feed a GTX 460?

Since you have the 768 I assume you're not going to SLi. Get a 955, it'll be a huge upgrade.

Maybe you could increase image quality. Even on an i7 if you use low details a 460 wouldn't break any sweat.

I set all of these games on their highest settings @ 1400x900 resolution, with at least 2x MSAA if available.

UPDATE:

Oddly though, when playing Witcher 2 @ 1400x900 on High (without Ubersampling) i get 30-50 fps with 92% GPU usage. It actually plays good on Witcher 2 and i can see that the GPU is really being used.

Running at low resolution with low texture will not put much stress on your GPU but mostly on your CPU. As soon as you crank up the resolution and texture/quality, then you will be high GPU usage. Try running at 800x600 low vs 1400x900 high and you will see what I mean.

Dirt 3, Dues Ex, Crysis 2 are also fairly well threaded. A quad core would most likely boost your performance significantly.

Those games you listed are optimized for 4 core CPU's. Although those numbers do look off. That res should still stress your GPU more then 45%.

The Witcher 2 thing I don't get its also a well threaded game. Latest Driver maybe?

If you are getting playable frame rates I wouldn't worry too much about it.

no L3 cache, that's the problem for some games.

l3 schmell3 ..i bet you'd see an improvement by upgrading mobo and RAM ..then overclocking your cpu more..also..it would stress the gpu more @ 1920 x 1080 or 16xx by 1xxx
