6970 Powerconnector problem

Thread Starter
Hello,

Just bought the Asus 6970 DCII because my 6950 DCII was broken.
When installing I noticed a problem. The 6970 requires 2 x 8-pin powerconnector. My PSU has 1 6+2 and 1 6 power connector.
After some testing, the graphics card would not start up with 1 8-pin and 1 6-pin powerconnector attached. Afterwards I tried to start it up with using the 2 x 6-pin to 1 8-pin connector that comes with the 6970, which I could only connect with 1 6-pin connector.

Found out that this works.
So, now in Windows everything seems to work fine but after about an hour I notice the temps in idle were way too high. (62-65°C)
Also went gaming in Rift for a while and when I enter the 3D-environment the 6970 suddenly goes crazy, seems like the fans go 60+%, just like a heli-sound. 10 minutes of gaming gives me temps of 80-90°C+ so that is definitely not normal. Underclocking the card gives me same problem.

In either case, I've ordered myself a new PSU, which is the Corsair CMPSU-850HX. Could my problem be related to having the powerconnector on the 6970 not connected properly? Any thoughts? Sorry for bad english too..

Well wanted to switch PSU for a long time actually.
For 1) It's 850W & 90+
For 2) Because it looks way too good

And I can setup crossfire in future.

Oh, because I want to say that the PSU can't be the cause of higher GPU temps.

Also not by having the 6970 not properly connected with two 8-pin powerconnectors?

It wouldn't cause temperature problems, no. If anything at all, it might cause some instability problems or something, but I doubt even that would happen.

Just a small update about the temps:

When totally idle the temps are around 40°C.
When mainly internetbrowsing, watching movie, .. it's around 60-67°C
And in games the temps rise 90+°C which is totally wrong..

Anyone could give me an idea what is going wrong? Nothing is overclocked on my computer right now. I really hope this isn't an RMA, which I don't think it is?

Doing fresh install tomorrow when I recieve my Corsair CMPSU-850HX.
