I don't know and not sure how you read it, you should run stress test or games to see the fullload temperatures not during idle. Use latest GPU-Z 0.5.5.

Just re-apply the thermal paste you will be fine afterward. If you have doubt how to do it, just send it back.

Sorry man, I'm just so nervous on getting this fixed. Have found out the correct settings now and the temperature readings on GPU-Z are mostly above 100°C now. However the temperatures lower quickly to 40°C, is it normal that this lowers so quickly?
Didn't see any artifacts or glitches. Have applied thermal paste before and will try to do it now again. I have Antec Formula 7 and Zalman ZM-STG1, both are fine I guess. I hope this will get it fixed..

It's not a concern how fast the temps cooling down. In your case, the thermal transfer is so bad even not to show the signs of throttle. It just shut down.

Clean the stock paste with Q-tip, re-apply, check for contact surface twice, if it's good, clean it up, re-apply then put the HS back on.

Ok, removed the stock cooler carefully and cleaned the old thermal paste and added a layer of Zalman ZM-STG1 on the core.

Started up computer and idle temp was 45°C
Booted up Furmark and the temperature goes DIRECTLY to 100+°C with the GPU Usage of 100% and the fan speed of 100%.
Shutted down Furmark and the temp drops to 45°C within seconds.
Seems the temperature readings aren't working properly, don't think there's anything wrong with the actual temperature going crazy.

Any tips / solutions on what now?

Get a proper thermal paste MX-3/MX-4. Your idle/load temperature is not improving at all. If you seriously think it is the temperature sensors screwed up then return it.

There are 5 temp sensors on that card, if you are convinced 5 of them defective, which I find it hard to believe, then there is nothing I could suggest further.

However when I feel if the cooler is getting hot when it's giving me those temperatures it's not hot at all. Very cool actually..
And isn't it rather impossible to get the GPU to +100°C immediately after starting up Furmark?

I have in either case just filled in a form to Asus and let's see what they say.
Anyone know the RMA-procedure?

Possible if the card is running with these conditions:

1. Close closure without airflow.
2. Ambient is at 60-70°C.
3. Bad to no contact between GPU core with heatsink cooler.
4. Fan is not working.

I'm thinking your havng the same problems as I did. I had a Ultra x3 1000w with 4 6pin on it. So I had to use adapters to run my MSI 5870 with 2 8pins on it. Within 3 months the card failed with very high temps like your having. I rma ed it 3 times. They ended up sending me a 6970 as a replacement. 3 weeks after I got it I had to rma that one. So I said screw it and got tired of having a downed rig so I went out and bought a new Psu the Corsiar HX 1000w just to see if it was the power supply. Low and be hold the Ultra psu was the cause of the damage to the cards (was not overclocking them either) I had to rma. Buying the proper psu did the trick.

With that said the damage has been done and you may never be able to fix the high temps you got now and that card may fail in the future.

Note used 3 different adapters on 3 different cards and all failed.

1. Airflow is I have to say excellent, one 200mm in the front which pushes air in.
The Corsair H80 pushes air in too and there are 2 120mm who push air out at the top.

2. Certainly not 60-70°C

3. Maybe, but checked twice when I reinstalled the cooler on the GPU, nothing noticed.

4. Fans both working great.

It's just bothering me to send the card to RMA and wait another 3 weeks to game.
