That looks like the only option left, RMA. I hope the third card will give you years of joy

I rma'd an asus motherboard about a month ago. It was smooth sailing with the exception that the package needs tp be signed for upon delivery and no one is home during the day (my problem, not asus).

To start i called their number on the website for tech support (its not an 800number) and described the problem.they sent me an initial rma application via email and verifiedxthey had a replacement in stock).

The following day they sent me a cfull rma app that i had physically sign and provide credit card info and fax or scan and email back. Once they received that the mailed me a new board and gave me two weeks to mail back the defective unit orcthey would have charged my card.

All in all it took one week from beginning to end and it cost me shipping only.

I was very very happy.

Good luck

You can look it up at www.asus.com, I believe the procedure is different from one country to the others.

I am looking at the PSU wiring and 6 pins-to-8 pins adapter, the extra 2 pins just ground (negative). I still could not digest that it might cause damage to the card, not unless one of the -12v of the rail is faulty, then again it will damage motherboard and CPU too.

I didn't think so either. With it being a 1000w psu on a 70+ amp rail. I figured I would have no problems running the card. But after going through 4 cards on the same psu in 6 months. Reformatted 3 of the 4 times as well. I could however run any card that had just 2 6 pins without a hiccup. The only thing I changed was the psu with the right power connectors and all has been fine since.

I really feel that the 6970 core is a defective core, I have bought a sapphire and a vtx3d 6970 and both have had to be RMA'd. The sapphire one is going fine now' haven't got back the vtx3d one yet. They also run REALLY hot and loud compared to 5870s which are only like 10-20% slower. My 6990 in my sig rig (yes I know that I haven't updated it) idles at 60-70c and games around 100c with the fan on a very loud setting (Haven't really looked into this because reviews say similar things).

Also experiencing some weird temperature changes while random internet browsing / idling.
For instance, shown here:
When the Core hertz is 250 and memory is 150 the temp stays around 45°C but when hertz & memory goes up like when watching a youtube movie (500mhz - 1375 memory hz) the temp goes to 90°C within seconds.

Could it be that the cooler of the 6970 isn't giving good contact against the core and will that give me those temp changes? Still have some thermal pads from the Accelero Xtreme Plus II and maybe giving those a go? Any howto on to place those on the core?

I would return it. I have had 10 video cards or so and never seen temps on any of them that high unless there was something not right with it.. Or at least call Asus and see if you can get a tech rep on the phone and tell him whats going on. There's something not right about that card and them temps.

Its normal for clock and memory raise while watching a movie, nothing wrong there, i think you should set a fan control in msi AB so that the fan speed raises when the temps does.

My cards also idle at about 40's, the first idle at 50, because of 3 monitors.

You should really raise the fan speed.

?????

These temps are really not normal and raising fan speed will not fix this at all.
