SLI temps

Thread Starter
Hey everyone

I just put together a new build with the following specs:

2 x Evga gtx 560
2500k
Asus Maximus Extreme Gene-z
8gb Corsair Vengence Ram
Corsair 600t case
Corsair GS800w psu
Corsair H60 Water Cooler

My question is that when I run the two video cards in sli the top gets considerably hot under load, 90c. Under idle stays around 40c. The most the bottom gets to is 55c. Should I rma these two cards for a better single card or should I keep using them the way they are?

Have you tried setting up a custom fan profile using MSI Afterburner?

It's very simple.

I turned both GPU fans up all the way on evga precision and I've installed a fan on the side mesh panel of my case still hovers around 90c at load.

Does your case have enough airflow? Are your fans fully functional (no dust, broken fins)?

Cards in SLI mode will always be hotter than in single mode. If your case does not have effecient enough air flow to handle this, then you run into your problem. The cards themselves are not the problem, it's the airflow.

If you feel the need to run a single card, then so be it. But I'd examine either your case fans, air flow and/or case in general before hand.

Everything is brand new, so I don't think dust is an issue yet. It doesn't really bother me that the card gets to 90c, I'm just concerned about the longevity of the card and that maybe it's just better to return both and get a single 570. When running one card the temperature is really low. I just ordered four 120mm fans for the side of the case to try to alleviate this situation.

Sounds to me like the primary card is getting very little fresh air, which is causing it to idle and especially load at a lot higher temperatures. This is actually normal and I doubt you'd be able to RMA it for that. Your best bet is to try to get more air into your case on the side panel to allow the primary card to get more cooler air, rather then the hot air its mainly getting from the ass of the second/bottom card.

I figured when I got the Motherboard, being a Micro ATX, the cards would be close together and they would probably heat up a bit, I just wasn't sure what temperature was normal. I can probably get away with RMA back to Newegg being that it's only like two weeks old. Do you think it's worth it to do that or just add the fans and keep it the way it is?

Wow surely 90c on load isn't the norm there is definitely something wrong with it have you tried swapping the cards round to see if the other hits 90c as well?
have you taken the card out and examined the fins for damage? And surely fan speed on auto should be fine without any overclocking but a custom fan profile is a good idea to have Msi Afterburner is great. My Top card is normally around +20c hotter than my second on load. Try returning them if airflow is the cause and pick up a single 570/580.
Also you have downloaded the latest drivers for all your hardware right?

There is no damage, one card by itself is considerably lower, both work fine independently, drivers are fine also.

My top 460 Hawk can get close to 80-82C during load while the one below only gets up to 60C so it makes sense since you have a ref design card.

Here are what I would try to do:
1. Create as much space between those 2 cards as possible (you may wanna push the top card up and drag the bottom card down as much as you can while securing them into the case's expansion slots without bending so much or damaging the cards).
2. Turn Vsync on.
3. Get more fans / stronger fans to blow right in the space between the cards.
