It's worse in the US, because the real sick part is they don't tell you. At least in Russia and China you know you're getting screwed.

With many Western countries actively trying to destabilize China I don't see how China can afford not to censor and control the flow of information to their citizens.
That is the problem. How does a citizen in China know if the government is providing shelter, maintaining stability, bringing food to the table and keeping the lights running if dissenting opinion is censored?

If the government censors everybody that does not have the above things, then those people cannot organize to help themselves. The government can continue to abuse people without worry because no organized opponent will ever appear. The government has an iron fist on the public thoughts of the people.

Unfortunately for you, China and the USSR have already made the same mistake. A police state is unstable inherently because the citizens of a country make the state not the government officials. China has 2 options. It can allow its citizens the opportunity to organize against it, to openly voice their opinions, or it can continue to violently police any dissenting opinion until a revolution occurs. Those are the only options when it comes to government, as no government is ever able to govern perfectly.

The strength of the US comes from its ability to admit that it is a flawed system that needs constant appraisal and revision. The weakness of the Chinese system comes from its inability to respond to the flaws inherent in its governing body. Dictators fall eventually, history shows us that. The same thing happened to the virtual military dictatorship in the USSR and the same will most likely occur to the police state that exists in China.

Much like a protein that is folding, a government must be destabilized occasionally in order to reach a more stable point than its current position. The real question is how can China afford to censor its people, as that censorship removes the support of the base of the government. The base of a government is the little people at the bottom. The everyday citizen, not the know-it-all bureaucratic.

I don't see CNN reporting how many US troops die each day in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Union protests in Washington was brutally crushed and wasn't televised on mainstream media.

Wisconsin union protests was also crushed and not televised on mainstream media.

All debate about 9/11 was suppressed by mainstream media.

Occupy Wall Street was censored and Yahoo! admits to blocking emails that support the movement. Twitter has also been accused of censoring the movement.

Military is developing software that will manipulate therefore effectively censor and alter social media.

The West talks about Tiananmen Square, bet you haven't heard of the Bonus Army March to Washington DC where the federal government sent in troops to brutally crush and eradicate people in the square.

The history you read in your history books throughout school are whitewashed and censored. Guess the government "mistakenly" left out the slaughter of American Indians when they were claiming the land right?

and the list goes on.....

Do you still think you live in a country of free flowing information? You're only given the illusion that you have free access because information fed to your brain has already been altered. Don't be so naive and gullible. Truth may not set you free but it will make you less ignorant.
