Overlocking 6950 2GB - normal or bad?

Thread Starter
I'm getting an MSI Twin Frozr III 6950 2GB tomorrow so i'm seeing what my current card (XFX 6950 2GB reference) is capable of because i'm going to run both cards at the same clocks. My current card has its shaders unlocked but i'm finding it a bit harder to overclock. Some people seem to be able to get 950 core clock easy and maybe 1500 memory but I am stuck on 900/1400 on 1.15v. Furmark crashes if I increase the voltage to 1.16v or the core clock to any higher than 900 and I have found no way to get the memory any higher than it is. Am I doing something wrong or is my card just not a good overclocker? Are these respectable clocks? I don't want to damage my card and it already runs pretty hot as it is (tops out at about 79 whilst gaming, 89 in furmark).

900 core seems a bit low compared to some OC's I've seen (maybe those were golden cards?). Might just be a poor overclocker though. If you lower the memory to stock speeds and try to adjust core up, does that do anything?
900 max is possible. I agree on leaving the memory alone as much as possible, the core provides the speed you're looking for and sometime the memory slider can hold you back. keep tweaking it, but that might be all she's got.

Well, moving the memory down and the core up caused my computer to freak out and go crazy on me for 10 minutes so I'm just going to stick with default voltage 900/1400. Better than nothing I suppose and I doubt i'll be able to tell the difference when my other card gets here tomorrow and I get my crossfire up and running. Wish my card could clock more though, but it's still a good card.

You should be able to run the voltage the same as stock 6970 voltage (1.175). That's what I'm doing at least. I get 920 core stable with those (haven't messed around with increasing memory). I can't get it any higher, but I haven't tried increasing voltage any further. Don't know why your Furmark is crashing though.

I just did some OC testing today on my TFIII OC/PE and best I've done so far is 980/1400 but the voltage is at 1.250v lol, so it's def not a 24/7 for me, just a benchmarker OC. I'm just running 900/1400 @ 1149mV for my daily OC and if I want more power then 940core at 1200mV

i've got one of the MSI reference cards, unlocked shaders, 6950 BIOS. right now, its sitting at 930/1425 @ 1.150 and has had no lockups, tearing or heat issues for well over 60hrs of use.
