I agree.Whenever a company develops an engine for the 'next gen' console , its always a good thing; this just puts more pressure on the console manufacturers to release a 'next gen' system.

I'm not hating on him per se. I'm hating on that mentality the majority of "gamers" have...

I mean sure we get some nice looking games, but then they all turn out to be dull and dreary. Case and point Gears of War...

Gameplay is a subjective term sure, but remember that the market dictates the directions devs/publishers push their games. If the majority are looking for OMGLEETGRAFIXPEWPEWSHOOTARZ, that's what you'll get :/

A game that for someone appears to makes up for its graphics with gameplay is a bad game with gameplay that matches its crap graphics.

There are a lot of instances where playing the "gameplay card" is right, it's not just applicable in every instance.
Pretty much this.

What are you freaking talking about? Gen-Y was the NES/SNES and PSX era. How do we not have gaming roots?
Exactly. Thanks.

I'd won't mind that. (like ff 13 to a lot of people)

There are always enough *****ers, whiners and a handful of good critics anyway.
Everybody is critic. Only some ppl's criticism is majorly misguided.

Yes Im sure its cute in games like final fantasy where there is no aspect of realtime, the moment you hit a button you get some 2-3 min animation sequence.

One thing you cant take from the west is when they do make high fidelity graphic engines ect. It is because they intended on using it in Real-Time. They want all the actions within the game to work in concert of eachother. You want to fire a rocket. You want to see the smoke trail as it leaves, you want to watch the hallway or light up from the tail of flame, The dust getting kicked up from the backblast, and ofc the resulting explosion. What the best part about that? it happens the moment you do it and you can do it as many times as you like from as many angles. No pre-baked animated movie here, just you and the rocket launcher in the moment.

there are games that do this and do it quite well.. From battlefield, cod, F.E.A.R hell some of starwars games. Too many to try and list. However try naming just 1 japanese game that delivers anything even close to the experince. If anything I think its testament to how good gfx and developers are getting. They try to deliver something that doesn't break immersion. You don't think anything is special, because everything seems in place and makes sense. Thus the Devs did their job to the letter.
@ Bold 1: Clearly you're just talking out of your ass.

@ Bold 2: Enchanted Arms, Lost Odyssey, Resident Evil 5, Bayonetta, FF13, Resonance of Fate, Pretty much EVERY mainstream fighter this gen. And i then there's all the PS Exclusives as well...

If those games have bad graphics to you, then i guess you need to lay off the 3DMarks :/

Call me crazy, but I would like to believe that this new engine focuses just as much on efficiency as it does on "wowing you". I mean, "Photo realism" just doesn't impress me as much in concept as it once did.

I've played Metro 2033 in great detail, Crysis (original), and a slew of games in between. While raw graphics are nice, I honestly am one of the few crazy people who don't care when the next generation of "consoles" come out.

I want to see developers give us more bang per buck. I want to see PS3 games go down in price and to play a few I am missing out on.

I don't have any problem with the graphics level these days, I am now looking more towards more efficient Anti Aliasing, more efficient graphics which allow me to get the most out of my hardware.

And most importantly, great gameplay. I am ready to see something like another Stalker game. (I know Stalker 2 is coming out, but I want to see more games of the same quality.)

Honestly as a PS3 owner, I love my ps3 and am not upgrading anytime soon.. I seriously question if the next generation of consoles is going to be the same incremental increase in graphics as the last one was. I would really just rather see more amazing games than newer graphics.

A new console generation really has no influence on me..computer graphics are going to increase regardless, I have all the power in my pc I need for a while.. I'd rather this engine allow me to get more out of my gpu's for longer.. or even better.. if this engine did come to ps3 was was a giant "stop complaining" to devs who are bragging "current gen consoles are too weak for our engine!"

Well, if there's anything that could give upside to the fact that game play might not be totally thrown out of the window, they do mention this in the article:
Quote:
Square Enix technical officer Yoshihisa Hashimoto said that despite these features, Luminous will reduce the cost of game development by up to thirty percent, and will also allow development cycles to be shortened.
Hopefully that means they won't have to end up spending nearly as much time on graphics as we all might think at this point, which could leave time to refine game play.

Playing thru FF13 now. I always knew it sucked (Watched vids and watched my buddy play), but experiencing the suckage first hand... *sigh*

The game is so noobtastic i feel stupid playing the game. The cerebral challenge is nonexistant. Then there's FF14. I'm glad i didn't buy into that game...

Long story short: I have no faith in SE

Step 1: Create Photo realistic games
Step 2: Showcase on youtube in ****ty 480p
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit
Lol, so they show off photo-realism with a 480p video? In the real-time vs. photo portion, it's impressive, but still easy to discern that it's a game, more-so in the second set.
