Bulldozer Potential Build Log (Codename Octastic)

Thread Starter
I'm super excited by Bulldozer but unfortunately, it may take some time to actually build this system while waiting for the new GPU's to come out and settle at a price that I like. So this is my potential build log. It may change based on specials and deals and I have a few of the things I want to use already so here's the list.

Top Bulldozer 8 Core Processor: As of right now it's the AMD FX 8150

Motherboard: We're still working on this one. Unfortunately, the choice will either be between the ASUS Crosshair V Formula or the Gigabyte UD7P. Either way, it will be 990FX. What's holding me back right now is the lack of Dual LAN. I actually use Dual LAN connections and none of the 990FX motherboards seem to come with them and that's killing my decisions.

RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM seems to be my best choice since I can't seem to find anymore CAS 8 2133Mhz RAM. Hopefully, there will be some by the time I start buying parts.

HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB and others for storage. I saw an SSD last night and almost ordered it so I may order it tonight and if so, 128GB SSD for OS and everything else for storage.

Case: Cooler Master 690 II. I already purchased the case for this build so we're good to go there.

Cooling: I believe I'll go with the AMD LCS or the Antec Kuhler 920. I may go for the Corsair H80 but the massive surface area looks like it may cause me some trouble. However, I'd rather have an Asetek system.

PSU: This is the hard one and probably no answer to it until I start buying as PSU's seem to change quite regularly. I'd rather have a Seasonic though.

GPU: I will probably get a 78xx or 79xx series AMD GPU. I just hope they'll come out sooner rather than later.

Why are you excited about bulldozer? It's terrible. Pay more for worse performance compared to 2500k's, makes perfect sense.

Go back to intel land. Kthx.

Kamuirsx, can't wait to see the build!

Nice build log

I'll be building a BD rig as well, but a bit on the cheaper side. It'll be a glorified BOINC rig, but i'll wait at least a month (most probably two and wait for more money to buy all together) for BIOSes to mature a bit and give BD a slight boost (at least above Thubans). If not, i'll just go with a Thuban and buy a BD-E when AMD launches them next year.

Can't wait to see a power-built BD rig

For the mobo, have you considered the Sabertooth 990FX? Seems to be in the same league as the Crosshair, quality-wise, and a bit lower price tag. It does not have dual LAN tho.

Brave man. Knowing that Bulldozer is a flop and still dishing out for a build. Your have my respect. People need to understand it YOUR money so it should not effect them at all. I would like to see some end user benchmarks so I'll support this thread. I'm subscribed and ready to read!

IF your going the BD road i suggest u atleast a 850w+ psu and 1k+ if ur doing Sli or CF since those Processors are Power Hungry at 4.6ghz they take almost 600Watts

Yeah I saw the Sabertooth but I really haven't seen anything review wise showing it against the UD7P or the Crosshair V so I'm a bit skeptical about it. I think there was one thing about it that was holding me back though but I cannot remember it at this moment in time.

Thanks for the comments though

Trust me, I can't wait to put it together. It should be one awesome rig once fully built and, hopefully, I won't want to build another for at least 3 years

I'm not sure I'll do Xfire on this build but it depends on the performance of the 78xx and 79xx series GPU's. If they are pretty good standing alone, I won't need to Xfire Here's hoping.

I'll probably go with a good Seasonic 850w. I was really wanting to get a XFX Black Edition 850w PSU that's based on the Seasonic Silver platform (I cannot remember the name of the top of my head) but I haven't seen them at all recently. I think they've been discontinued which is really weird considering how good they sold. Either way, something at least in the 80+ Silver or higher range. I've got to think about my electricity bill after all .

What can I say. I've waited this long to build this sucker and I'm not going to start changing my mind now . Besides, other than not benchmarking so well, as long as it runs everything I through at it for 3 years, I'm good

This is pretty nice!
Of course there might be other rigs that could be better in benchmark X or Y. But who cares. If you planned to build with BD go for it.
I got a reason not to build one atm *cough* money *cough*.
But I love the idea that you don`t mind about haters and fanboys and build YOUR rig with the components YOU want!

Good luck mate and happy building!
