I must be missing something. In each gaming benchmark comparison, the 2600K almost always comes in above the i7-3960X. I thought I was following the SB-E buzz pretty closely, and never found anything to suggest anything other than the SB-E's are going to provide several orders of magnitude greater gaming performance than the standard Sandy Bridge chipset.

I'm not sure if this benchmark or ones like it have been posted before.

I know these are pre-production chips, but they're due out in only a month and a bit. How is this possible? They can't double the gaming performance of the things this late in the game, as the first ones set for retail are probably being stamped out as I type this. So, someone help me out, seriously, I know I must be missing something here, otherwise this makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

..But if this truly is indicative of the SB-E as a gaming chip, then I'm laughing because I won't have to upgrade my CPU for a damned long time from the looks of things.

I'll tell you why
1. SB-E drops to 1.2GHz when idle while the 2600k drops to 1.6GHz
2. Games stress the GPU not the CPU even though the CPU is still involved for a weaker task
3. In idle, the 2600k is faster, but at full load SB-E is faster

When everything else of consequence is the same, performance is determined by clock speed.

The cores and how they are connected is almost identical. I/O differences don't account for much, and the only big change is the number of memory channels.

1. While you are correct, whilst gaming the CPU is not throttled down. So that doesn't apply.

2. A more powerful CPU facilitates more efficient use of GPU processing power. If the SB-E was all the rumors have it cracked up to be, we'd be seeing better performance in the benchies. We didn't.

3. See point 1. The benchmarks tested full-load performance, not idle performance, because if a system is idle it is not performing. So, I don't think so.

Sounds about right since games dopnt use 6 cores, but for multitasking video and graphics rending it will kick the 2600k's butt.
