Overclock question: FSB overclock results in weird game lag

Thread Starter
Hello,

I recently decided to create a game pc with as little as money possible. (specs see below). I have all the stuff I need except for the phenom II X4 processor that I'm still planning to buy.

Currently the processor is (I think, I'm at my dorm so I can't check) AMD Athlon II X2 255 (not sure if that number, but it's a 2.7 GHz).

I tried to overclock it using AMD overdrive. The Auto-Clock feature got the FSB reference frequency up to around 260 (with multiplier 13.5 it makes 3,4 GHz). It seems to be stable on stress tests, and everything works fine except when I start to game.

In game I get bursts of lag, but it's no framerate lag, it's lag as if suddenly the time is set to slowmotion in the game. It comes in waves, like there is some sort of bottleneck somewhere. And really, it's not framerate lag. Problems are only when the overclock is active.

What could be causing this? All help greatly appreciated!

PC SPECS:
PSU: 650w ADATA 80+ cert
mobo: GA-MA770-UD3 (rev. 1.0)
Ram: 4GB kingston hyperx DDR2 1066
GPU: hd 6790
processor: AMD Athlon II X2 (not sure about the number, but it's 2.7 GHz)

Ram is likely clocekd way up, check your ram multiplier.
