GTX 480 SLI + Antec 620's Mod - Page 12

Very good thread I'd like to know how those zip ties are doing, black ones would have looked better but I believe its easier to see the white ones incase something happened. How does the memory act is it cool and stable?

Ive redone mine several times now and every time ive done it those zipstraps were as solid as when first attached. There is no question in my mind that zipstraps are rock solid and pose no hazards.

My ram is monitored constantly, never has heat been an issue in any way that i could see on screen. Ive seen my ram up to 74c now. No artifacting onscreen, ram is suppose to be able to reach 120c (desktop ram) and i see no reason why card ram would be any different.....but, im no expert so if another does know the true limmit to vram please chime in here.

Its a fantastic mod, best way to cheaply watercool your gc.

Yeah the zip ties seem to be holding up well. I've detached several times and they seem solid.

it would probably stand to reason since the RAM is attached to the PCB of the card, that it would not be able to stand the full heat of a stick of RAM. However, I wonder why noone has made a heatsink with a small chipset style fan for ppl that mod like this? or maybe heat spreaders like would go on RAM sticks? Personally, with my recent dive into higher performance RAM, I have grown very fond of these sticks with heat spreaders. Wish I had the gonads to take my GTX460 apart and look at the design. I'm sure you could get aftermarket heat spreaders that would fit on like Kingston Value RAM to work on it.

This is such a new idea for gpu cooling it will take time for companys to find ways to make money off it. Other than the peeps you see here with pics and perhaps a handfull of others who have not posted pics of their mod we are about the only ones doing it this way. There are other ways to mod a cpu cooler to a gpu waterblock but not by keeping the cpu cooler stock. We are not a big enough market yet. There are other aftermarket passive heatspreaders that can be bought and placed on the cards various components. IMO if you keep the fans then you have the same cooling as the stock solution but you dont have the resistance of the heatsink between the fan and pcb.
I tend to agree with gc ram having a less heat thresh hold than stick ram but i think im still well in the safe values.....i hope lol

one way to find out, let `er burn! You do have aftermarket heat sinks on the RAM, right?

TBH, Asetec has been keeping tabs on the forum for the H20 620/920 club, wouldn't surprise me if they weren't in the labs trying to cook something up. thumb.gif I mean, they already tested one design on the PNY XLR8 GTX580's, which you had a choice of graphics card with Liquid cooler and radiator, or one that added a CPU block to the chain! The downfall is they do not sell this separate from the GPU, so it's expensive. I'm sure once they make their money off that setup, or try to savage money from that setup, the market will be flooded with GPU/CPU pre-assembled setups.biggrin.gif

*Edit* looking at this pic from Asetek's website of their XLR8 apart:
357
I don't see why I can't buy a H20 620, hack the heatsink on my little brother's GTX260 drill holes in it for mounting brackets to latch to the heatsink flush with the lvl the old matting surface, then screw the heatsink back down. BLAM! Got a coldplate pump on the GPU, and heatsink with fan on the RAM!

Some have made custom adapters, but trust me, the zip ties work fine .
