GTX 480 SLI + Antec 620's Mod - Page 13

There is a thread here for making/buying custom brackets to attach the pump to the card. Lots of attention but im not sure if the poster has started selling the mounts. He has posted the log on how to make your own though thumb.gif

My 560ti/H70 using zipstraps was like having it screwed to the pcb, beating it with a hammer could not have moved it. My 580 has a little play to it, just ever so slight when first mounted. The TIM has cured/stiffened and now i will need to put alot of pressure to get the two apart. My lowest temps at start up is 20-21c and average is 24-25c. It would seem that even with the little play i have it has no effect on cooling ability. Ive been running it like this for months now.

Try the zippys first and see how it works, im sure youll agree that its the cheapest and most simple of methods anywhere. We all had that "holy crap, what am i doing" sinking feeling before doing the mod, i know i did and even more doing it to a $600 gpu. Watch your temps for the first while, dont oc or bench the card till your sure your happy with it. Once you know the mod has worked add some volts and see the results.

Its scarry at first and your thinking to yourself that the zippys wont hold but work though the fear, its well worth the reward at the end.

Exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm getting a 560ti soon and would love to do this mod on the card, though i'll be using whichever cooler I can get my hands on for a decent price, so H50/60 or Antec 620 most likely.

I ran Heaven on my rig at the exact same settings as the OP and couldn't believe that I only got ONE fps higher than he did with dual GTX 580's at 930MHz! I was pretty confounded until I realized that he was running 2.1 and I have 2.5. I guess that makes a bit of a difference. Still, nice score OP!

the h50 has a tall tower style pump where as the H60,70,80,100 all have low profile pumps. Makes case management better and you still have an option to sli with the new series. The H50 is getting pretty old to, used it would have some good hours log on it.

Just my thoughts but ive seen the hight thing mentioned many times....but no personal hands on myself. Id say go for the new series if you get the choice.

Thread is in my sig for a bracket plate version. My version doesn't have any play in it with just hand tighetening the bolts a bit. There is another bracket plate version where the kuhler or h50 is able to screw in normally. This guy was selling the bracket but I found his version wouldn't work with the gtx470 due to the height of the stock unisink. But honestly if the zip ties hold up well from what everyone else is saying, I'd use zip ties myself. It's just simple and easier. I think all that's needed now is to make a custom shround out of something cheap so that the stock gpu fan gets put to better use. I myself just use a side mounted 120mm fan that blows over the card and have had zero issues at over 900mhz clock on the gpu for hours of gambing.

That is a really nice method for your mod. Very even pressure for the pump to sit on the chip area. Fantastic really.

I dont like the play but it has no effect on cooling. I still have start up temps of 20c WOOT. The zipstraps work very well biggrin.gif
post #128 of 348
almost the exact same system as the OP. i want to do this mod within the week. I hope you guys can help me

this is my case. an old gigabyte 3d aurora 570. I love this case to death and modded it for years. have no plans of replacing it
475

first is rad placement. this is where I plan to place them
478

I always have my sidepanel opened so no worries about airflow btw. my cards are heating up bad even with the sidepanel opened. they're decent but after seeing the op's temps after the mod I can't help myself to have the same as well. and I think this is very doable too and most importantly very cheap tongue.gif

Thats a pretty sweet case. You will have no problem getting the Kuhlers in and you will love the performance....and lack of noise! I run my fans at 50% for near silence an I'm still in the 50's on temps.

That is a nice case.

If i could make a suggestion for mounting, being that you leave your cover off the machine, this would make the instal easy. Ive thought about this for my rig and how it would look with fans floating infront of my case window. Not screwed into the window and vents cut but by having two metal (chrome) bars that ran from the top of the case to the bottom-side by side. the fans would be attached to the metal bars. This could/would work for mounting your rads also. Perhaps even blow onto the pcb to aid in cooling.

Just a thought thumb.gif
