Only thing is I first need a new PSU, since mine is 600w now, and I want to get a better card. Maybe a kepler or 580 depending on prices, then the WC mod forsure.

I've got a question for some people.

What are your VRM and/or VRAM temps? I was thinking the no noise factor...no noise, no cooling on the PCB or VRAM sinks... So do you guys still have a fan on those?
It's just interesting because even on my stock cooler with the IHS mod, my GPU no longer is the hottest component on the card. I'll get higher PCB temps using my infrared gun than what my GPU is at...

Cakewalk, you tell us lol. Point that gun at your card after you mod it. If there was a store like futureshop...other big box store is buy one to test then return it afterwards....I don't mind doing that to those places, over inflated prices anyways.
No one really knows the answer yet.

Personally I was able to keep the PCB heatspreader. My VRM temps are only higher because I have OC'd more.

However, I am going to take this wall out of the shroud to see if it helps with blowing air around the part of the spreader that actually touches the VRM's

I had the pcb heatspreader and fan removed for about a month on both my 480's. I taped down a couple of the heat sensors from the sentry II on the VRMs and they never went over 50c. Not sure how accurate they were but that's all I had. Never noticed any problems.

After getting some new thermal pads I replaced the heat spreader as well the stock fan. I have a good amount of air going thru the case as well. My advice is to retain the stock fan if possible or use a spot fan to assist in cooling.

haha...i was just like you, always going on frozencpu to budget out my build. then, i saw the light, it was a beautiful light that told me "if you mod it, you will have lower gpu temps and a quieter gpu"! okay, maybe it wasn't exactly like that, but "The Mod" was the best idea ever! i have some plans to move my radiator to the front of my case to clean it up a bit and maybe add a second 480 with The Mod...biggrin.gif

rage - sorry for the delay in getting those pictures. i'm working on getting some tonight.

Sounds good, you really will like the performance a second card gets you. These 480's scream in SLI. I'm always running mine at 850 OC at 50% fan speed and they shred thru BF3.

I ran vantage @ 850/2200 yesterday and was very pleased with the results. I didn't have much time to tweak. I ran half the first gpu test after I posted the pics and then went to bed. I'm gonna try to get some pics up of my setup. I had to rig some of my hard drive bays. I have my rads up against the sides of my case so the fan is blowing cold air but it doesn't really have anywhere to put the hot air. My temps hit mid- high 60's. I'm sure once the TIM cures it will drop a bit. Definitely noticed a difference on my CPU temps with the formula 7. And of course, no screaming gpu fans. I have my desk against a wall with a window and I have a big box fan that exhausts hot air out of my office, but I can still notice a decrease in noise.

Edit: on my phone, sorry for grammar, etc.

Is really very amazing when looking back though the last few pages of this cooling section. There is so much interest for this mod. I would not call it a revolution but at the speed this is catching on its sure to become a standard practice for gpu cooling. Seems every other day another user is buying a cooler to mod to their gpu. Your thread here Rage is a very good indicator of its popularity. I am most pleased with the results ive recived by modding my gpu, could not be happier to be honest. I like the fact its different to traditional gpu cooling, i like the silence but most of all i like seeing 19c on my gpu after i start my gpu.

Gentleman, I am proud to say....that I am now a man!

I just finished this mod, literally, a few minutes ago and so far my idle temps are between 34c-35c. Which is a 2c-3c difference before the IHS mod. Going to test it out in BF3, be back in a few! biggrin.gif
