Crossfire ASUS 6970 DCII Ribbons

Thread Starter
Quick question:

I can't find a definitive answer anywhere: I have two ASUS 6970 DCII's, the triple decker cards, in crossfire set up and one is doing a considerable amount of work while the other is just pitching in once in awhile, and barely.

Should I be using two ribbons or one between the two? I've seen people say either one, and I know some cards need both.

Using 2 Crossfire bridges cant hurt. It allows more bandwidth for the cards. Also, you have enabled crossfire in the amd control panel right?

Use one for 6970. Crossfire will work in 3D applications fullscreen mode. Atleast AMD is smart enough not to make 2 to 4 cards to go into fullspeed for desktop and web browsing.

See. This is exactly what I mean. There is absolutely no consensus. If using 2 bridges on a Crossfire set up with 2 cards supposedly allows for more bandwidth, wouldn't you always want to use two?

Or is there literally no difference? I'm just trying to squeeze the most of out these things and make sure they're working right.

I have everything set up in the control panel right, but sometimes I get creeped out because the temp on one of them in the overdrive panel will say 0.

Also, only when I have the display plugged into the top one (the one that has considerably less breathing room considering it has another triple decker card right below it) that's the only one that can see the BIOs when it's booting. I can plug it in to the bottom cooler card but I can't see anything untill the BIOs comes up- but I want the bottom to be my main card for cooling purposes. Any ideas?

You don't need 2 bridge for 6xxx series cards. People are confusing bandwidth with buswidth. You don't need the second bridge. I am not sure for the 4xxx series though. Using 2 will not give you any performance gains but potentially to cause miscommunications resulting in graphical issues and texture flickering.

If you don't see the second GPU is working, make sure you install CAP to engage crossfire. Download link http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

Alright, well I suppose it's settled then? It could actually be detrimental to use more than one crossfire bridge? Can we agree on that?

Also, anyone have any idea about my BIOS issue? I can see the BIOs screen when I use my top crossfire card but not the bottom one (which I want to use because it's less cramped and cools easier).

Let's the hearsay on the internet starts, it will be fun to watch but I won't get into that.

You can only plug the monitors to the main rendering card but not the second card as part of the crossfire setup, not the other way around. You can plug monitors to main and second card but it will disable crossfire by default.

Let's hear about the twin crossfire bridges from others tongue.gif

Even if my bottom card is the main card in crossfire, I still can't see anything untill windows boots up… Meaning the bios isn't displaying. But everything is fine when windows starts.

However, when the top card is my main card (ie the one that's displaying) i CAN see the bios and go into windows fine. Is there any way to use my bottom x16 slot as the one I see the BIOS from? The bottom slot as you can understand with two triple decker cards breaths better.

Are these intake or exaust?

If I'm not mistaken AMD has officially said that anything above a 4k card does not see any benefit with more than one bridge. The only reason there are two bridge connectors on each card is for 3-4 way crossfire. I would trust the manufacturer on this over hearsay.

I figured out my issue with not seeing the BIOS on boot up with the bottom card, it was a BIOS setting that had to be set to PCI EXPRESS x8 which essentially meant that "the bottom card in a crossfire setup" because they're pushed down to x8. Whereas X16 refers to explicitly the top card.. I guess.

The top one still seems to be doing the most work.

Thanks for your help guys!
