[CNET] iOS 5 upgraders reporting installation hickups - Page 3

I was downloading 10.7.2 and had errors as well. They pretty much updated almost everything today. iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, iTunes, OSX Lion laptops/desktops , and OSX Lion Servers. So, yeah of course you will have some full servers. They should have rolled out a device or segment each day or at lease iOS today and iTunes/OSX updates a day or Two before.

Not to jump in and start any Apple hate in here, but the update process for any Apple product is usually a headache. I've had a few experiences at work where upgrading OS X is a headache, to the point that the Mac guy freaks out obsessively over making backups. I know: ALWAYS backup before any major software or hardware change, but the data at hand wasn't really that important as we have network storage, which is why I didn't really understand his frustration... just wipe the damn thing and install cleanly! iPhone 3G/3GS had similar woes with the iOS 4 update, and now the 4 with iOS 5. A few of my FB friends had trouble retrieving all their contacts, and ended up using OUTLOOK (yes, a MICROSOFT app) to do so. To compare, the Windows updating process between XP > Vista > 7 typically goes rather smoothly, with the exception of moving from x86 to x64, as do OTA Android and WP7 updates.

I guess my point in this post is to point out that Apple has lots of room to improve on this; at this point any improvement is huge improvement. I just really don't understand how they can decide to roll out iOS 5 updates without THOROUGHLY testing it out internally, within employees that use iPhones on an everyday basis; I'm sure more than a handful of them do. The high number of reported issues makes it rather obvious that it wasn't efficiently tested.

I had to try about 25 to 30 times before it finally updated my iPad. And three times it was stuck in restore mode with no way to authenticate with th servers, so that may be the 'brick' people are talking about.

The download wasn't the problem, it was the installation, didn't matter where you got it from.

you can restore iOS 5 using a local update by getting them from torrents like demonoid or piratebay.

I restored it the day iOS 5 GM came for iPod Touch 4G & it worked perfectly.

My friend with an iPad had trouble updating his straight OUT OF THE BOX. As much of an Apple fan as he is, he is adamant on complaining to Apple about it.
