Three monitor setup

Thread Starter
Hey, I was thinking of picking up another monitor. Problem is, I only have one GTX 460 right now. I've read that you can only get two outputs out of the GTX 460. Would I have to buy another one and run them in SLI, or could I use one of my older cards (8600GT, 4850) or something to run with it?

A second card is required in Sli unless you get a 590 for nvidia surround.

Can I use any card, or does it have to be another 460?

You have to have two of the same model card for SLI. See my sig rig for an example of what you're trying.

For surround you need same cards and sli.
If you only want to "extend" your desktop, any card should do.
It might be better if you stick with the same brands to avoid conflict in drivers.

Yeah I know, I just wasn't sure if it was possible to use three independent monitors (I don't need it for gaming) without SLI.

Thanks. This is what I wanted. My 8600 should be fine?

If you just want the third monitor you can use any card. I have two running off my 580 and then I have a third monitor that runs off an old x800. I just have to be carefull never to drag a 3D app onto the monitor powered by the old video card. I ussually just have it displaying my system info and windows gadgets...occationally a webpage.

I will also hook up two monitors to the x800 when I want four, but I don't typically run it like that.

I wouldn't expect you to have much game performance with a 3 monitor setup for 460's in sli. -Personally I wouldn't bother, not much vram and games are too demanding for this...

It's not for gaming, it's so I can code easier (addition screens are awesome)! Thanks for the replies guys, my question is answered.
