Planning on getting a Gulftown, need advice

Thread Starter
Due to the epic failure that is "Bulldozer", I'm switching to Intel.

Because of the work I do, I welcome more cores (one reason why I was excited for FX before the benches came out). SB-E is out of my budget. I'm planning to get an i7 970 and a decent motherboard cheap on Cyber Monday (considering SB-E should be out by then, I'm guessing $350 for the CPU and ~$150 for a mid-range board?).

Anyway.

Coming from AMD, I would appreciate some advice.

AMD processors with a locked bclk love higher frequency RAM when overclocking. Would I get a considerably higher OC going with, say, 1866MHz RAM over some cheap (but non-generic) 1066?

AMD processors respond very well to lower temps (ie 4GHz w/ 1.45v with a 212+ but 4.3GHz w/ 1.45v with a custom loop... idk if that's an entirely accurate representation, but you get the point). I know Sandy Bridge does not. If I get a Rasa kit instead of a high-end air cooler like a Frio OCK, how much higher of an OC should I expect?

Is there much of a difference between the i7 970 and 980 when it comes to OC potential?

Thanks in advance.

From what I've seen, the 980's (locked) and 990x's overclock a lot better than the older 970 and 980x's. They're probably higher binned.

I can't speak for OCing on 1366, but I haven't found that my i7 860 OC's or responds better to different speeds of RAM. Usually it's just a case of adjusting the IMC/RAM voltage accordingly. Though it may be a little harder to gain stability with very high frequencies.

You would probably gain about 200-300Mhz (rough guess) extra with the Rasa kit, depending on how good your chip is.

or you could get the i7-2600k. if outperforms the 970 even in multithreaded apps.

My advice is to get an i7 2600k, since the 1155 socket will be supported in years to come, while 1366 is dead.

As for OC'ing capabilities, i7 980x's and i7 970s are on the same area. My i7 970 overlclocks higher a good amount of i7 980x's I have seen. i7 990X's tend to overclock more however.

While my chip cannot boot over 4.5Ghz (no matter how much voltage you pump in it), I have seen a good amount of i7 990X's reaching 4.6Ghz at 24/7 temps and voltages.

Wait for SB-E.

For the Price it isn't worth right now. also Intel will make that platform(1366) EOL very soon.

Thanks, I guess I'd rather save around $100 and go with a 980 over a Rasa kit and more expensive RAM.

I haven't seen any benchmark results suggesting this with both of them overclocked... link please?

Thanks for the recommendations, but I've checked out that board and I'm not too fond of its expansion slot spacing. While MSI has a terrible reputation on AMD, their Intel boards seem quite nice and I am looking into the X58A-GD65. Also Corsair RAM seems to command a somewhat hefty price premium over similar G.Skill.

I meant the 980, not the 980X (locked multi, $400 less). Since the 980 comes from the same batches that the 990X comes from, I guess I'll go with the better overclocker.

I'm not really interested in a 2600k; I understand why people would recommend it but the apparent fact of the matter is that no quad core in the very near future will defeat a heavy overclocked Gulftown in my workloads (rendering and encoding).

I do believe I mentioned in the OP that I'm planning on buying cheap after SB-E releases. I simply cannot afford SB-E. Considering that you can buy a used Gulftown for $400 today, I'm counting on getting a cheap deal.

I'm not quite concerned about an upgrade path. With 1155 I'll have to pay more to get the same performance about 6 months later and with 2011 I'd be paying a large premium that I cannot afford for a 10% improvement and by the time I'll be ready to upgrade the new Haswell socket will be out.

Thanks for the help everyone; I'm going to round up a list of parts on Newegg now.

EDIT: see attached screens

EDITX2: forgot to swap out 970 for 980; disregard that. Budget limit is $2000

BTW do you really need 6 cores?

Why buy a used one when you can get a New processor with better & newer architecture for lower prices.

Even SB-E will be having a $300~$400 Processor which I think will be a Quad-Core.

Also I feel a Core i7 2600K or the to be launched i7 2700K will be a great option when it comes to Quad with HT enabled.

ASUS has also updated major amount of its boards to Support PCI-E Gen3 & Intel 22nm (Ivy Bridge) via Hardware & BIOS update.

Link http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/PCIe3_Ready/

Do take a look if you can
