Do I need more POWER??!

Thread Starter
My PSU gets really loud when my PC is under load like gaming. It's an irritating whine and if I run prime95 it's REALLY LOUD. *head down, fist clenched*
I'm about to install an ASUS Xonar Essence STX sound card and may upgrade my video card so I obviously need MORE POWER! Do I? I've done stupid PSU calculators and they seem a tad... stupid. Thanks

Yup. Sounds like you need a new PSU. Not only will it eliminate the noise, but some peace of mind!

Edit - Wooooooooo 900 posts xD

That's more than enough power to handle your sig rig, even with a pair of 6870's and the Xonar if you plan on going that route.
But the PSU may be failing.
You sure it's the PSU that's getting loud? How is you case airflow?

I don't think it's an issue of "more power"

You're running a SB CPU and a modest 6870.

But I believe it's just the poor quality of the PSU.

Get yourself a Corsair TX series PSU.

EDIT: That noise is most likely "coil whine"...like a high pitched buzzing right?

Double check your connections coming out of your PSU just in case.

You dont have a great unit.
But I truly doubt its failing.

It sounds like its just "cap-whine."
Which is normal on all kinds of stuff.

You could run that system on a good 500w unit and CFX on a good 600w.
A Rosewill Green Series 630 would be absolutely perfect if you truly intend on going CFX in the near future.

Seek out a Seasonic X-650, or an XFX Core Edition 650w if you want epeen though. Both will be mad overkill for crossfire, but both are high quality units that will serve you well.

My votes go for a Rosewill Green 630w unit first.

As I said, if you want epeen get an XFX Core 650w or a Seasonic X650.

X650 then.
Its wicked overkill even for CFX in the future, but its also going to last you for years.
It is enough to run any single GPU on the market, and most Dual card configs, and it gives you padding for several years as single cards get more and more power hungry.
