With the growing popularity of indie games it's only right we get a proper thread for them!

NOTE: Many games will incorporate multiple genres (which can make it hard to categorize); therefore, I will categorize games based on their core genre. (e.g. Bastion may play as an isometric (or kinda top-down) shooter but is ultimately an RPG)

What You Can Do For This Thread
Talk about what you like or dislike, growing trends, and what we can expect about anything as long as it pertains to this thread.

If there is something out of place, missing, or mislabeled, bring it up and I'll fix it thumb.gif

As for submitting content for the list, limit games 1 per post (unless it's a series); include a complete list of genres/elements it incorporates and why you think it's awesome. You don't necessarily have to copy me, but here's a template (courtesy of Infomancer).

Feel free to add on additional material to any listed game and I'll add your post as a link next to the game.

Project Zomboid is a Zombie Survival RPG. Here are some of its planned features:
Retro-isometric style with plenty of zombie insides thrown in for good measure.
A massive city and the surrounding areas to traverse, explore and loot.
Open-ended sandbox world – survival is your only goal, and we’re sorry to tell you… you WILL die eventually.
Get infected. How will you spend your final days? Will you have a heroic moment of self-sacrifice, or end up chewing your best friend’s throat out?
Meet other survivors who you can join forces with, trade with, undertake missions for, or fight with for resources.
Loot, salvage, and build what you need to survive the apocalypse, from food and medical supplies, to weapons, even just booze to help get you through the nights.
Advanced item crafting allows you to use looted items to build weapons, traps, defenses, and many other things to help you survive.
Character progression. Learn skills and perks to help your character face the challenges of survival.
Starvation, illness, loneliness, depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, suicide, insanity, trust issues. There’s more to zombie survival than shooting zombie heads off.
Join your friends and survive the apocalypse together in co-op multiplayer.
The world changes the longer you survive; power plants fail, plunging the city into darkness and making batteries and tinned food prized commodities. The army rolls into the streets to perform ‘clean up operations’ and other gamechanging events occur the longer you survive.
Play in your browser, or stand-alone, on PC, Mac and Linux.

The idea behind alphafunding is simple, fans get instant access to their favorite games with the understanding that the game might be buggy and isn't complete - but frequent updates will add polish over time. This is a transplant from the thread "Indie Games...can't get enough" which is now obsolete because of this much better thread! biggrin.gif

still wanted to keep the good posts
Quote:
Orcs Must Die is an awesome example of this.
Tower Defense + a bit of RPG + 3rd person shooter + mass killing of orcs = a seriously great time!
the story is simple, old wizard dies, you start up, boom story in 5 seconds. yeah it isnt much but at least it's something and every bit is amusing.
after you finish a level the main character does a little victory dance for himself surrounded by the mass of bodies.
There is great variety with the traps, so many different ways to kill. then you have a crossbow that can stun, and a staff which you can use to throw orcs into the air. Everything has smooth animation, great sound, enemies have variety, great stuff all around.

and steam is doing wonders for these developers by giving us a one stop shop for everything.
Even better is so many of these games have demos! at least 75-85%. something that doesnt happy near enough (though i do understand why they arent made). also why pirate when you can check it out in a demo?!

now that i am starting to collect indie games i feel like i have stumbled into the best arcade ever invented. no pounding quarters for a fun time, just one time buy -sometimes in a combo pack that saves me even more money- and i am set until the world or the internet dies (take your pick on what's first.

i just cant get enough!! even better is that soon we will have the holiday sales! most take advantage of the bigger titles coming down in price and i know i will be, but i will be hunting out every indie game i can find.

current great games -totally subjective to me-

Orcs Must Die - just a demo but it is a sweet game with challenge and spunk 10/10

Terraria - sweet little dungeon crawler, i havent played it but many many have

Bastion - waiting for the holiday sales, loved the demo, dynamic story telling. when i played the demo i got to one area and decided to see how many things i could smash with the hammer, and the narrator waited a second then spoke of how 'our young hero vents his frustration of the collapse upon his surroundings" i had to stop and enjoy how much was really put into this game.

Defense grid - Solid TD, interesting story, a good refresh on how cool this type of gameplay is!
Revenge of the Titans - very challenging, tough to master, amazing soundtrack i had to download, and very funny, very new take on tower defense

Anomaly - havent got far into it, but it's a Top-down Tower Defense with you and the mob switching places, now you have to get to the objective and destroy the towers. it's a bit slow, but very interesting and you cant blame them for borrowing from crysis tongue.gif

Sanctum - futuristic (arent they all? haha) TD Shooter combo. very odd, but i have had fun trying to get good at this game. cool block style building and great leveling of towers and weapons.

Limbo - gosh what a weird game AND an amazing idea. fun gameplay, very creepy.

Edge - fun block puzzle game with 8 bit music, if i cant get the level i just let the music play!

Dwarfs - fun gold digging game, they took the gimic pretty far though, still an interesting play

need i say anything about 2 greats AudioSurf and Beat Hazard?!?! no!! they FREAKING ROCK

MAGICKA......HELLLOOOOOOOOOOO wheee.gifwheee.gifSUPER MEAT BOY......SAME THING

World of Goo - love the music! challenging, fun puzzle game, oddly cute blobs of goo.

Binding of Isaac is great...just needs native controller support IMO to be awesome

Revenge of the titans...really good spin on a tower defense game...definitely worth a try if you like tower defense games

Braid...another must play...its like a platformer with time altering abilities

Osmos...is like the starting stages of "Spore"...very relaxing game that has great eat or be eatin gameplay

Super Meat Boy...if you like hard and i mean VERY hard platformers than this is the game for you

i just listed a few games ive enjoyed and that i own on steam...someone already said this...but i would bookmark the humble bundle site and check it out when they run their sales...they have a sale going right now thats pretty good...but their last sale was awesome...for 5$ i got like 17 games or something like that

Blocks that Matter: a cute puzzle platformer with a unique twist of drilling blocks and using them in different ways.

And Yet It Moves: One of my all time run and jump favorites, the main game mechanic is that you can rotate world around your character to progress and solve puzzles.

Defy Gravity: 2D platformer. You're a guy with a jetpack and a special gun that fires orbs that either attract matter (including yourself if you wish) or repulse it. Almost feels like a faster paced 2D version of portal.

Zeit Squared: Side scrolling space combat game with the unique game mechanic of the necessary use of time travel to defeat foes.

Addition recommendations for Osmos, Trine, Frozen Synapse that have already been mentioned.

Limbo -
Talk about a quiet game, i couldnt turn on my own music though, nothing i have could compliment this gritty dark game. most the sound is from your feet hitting the ground. nothing is truly pleasant in the game, it's a black dream world wanting to kill you. the demo showed a progression of traps trying to give the player a good preview of what else the makers have thought up. very interesting game, you wont keep playing for fun, but for the intrigue and curiosity of whats to come next.

hacker evolution -
i have no idea why i tried this one out. faint curiosity. demo was tough to run because it loved to freeze and crash. mostly just typing with a helpful "type this out exectly next' walkthrough.. not really interesting.

Steel Storm: Burning Retribution -
definitely a quarter arcade game, it's fun but it is also everything we have done before with Tyrian, 1942 (all the top down shooting vehicle with upgrades games). this one just does it from a slight angle and is set in the future. all you have to do is steer and hold down shoot and you'll win. again, it's fun, but it wont keep your interest

Atom Zombie Smasher -
save the yellow blocks from the purple blocks. so in this one you save people from the zombies by via helicopters, problem is once every one is grouped and 1 zombie comes up it's all over and the whole mob turns to zombies. interesting puzzle game, fun setting. top down in a city that looks like a board game is kinda cool. very interesting concept, difficult though.

Solar 2 -
top down....galaxy maker? start as a rock, become a planet, then a star, and work your way up to being a black hole i think. good ambient music. once your planet has enough mass there will be life (humans) who will evolve to make space ships to shoot asteroids. all in all a simple, but very interesting game, definitely not for everyone though. think ill buy it for the amusement factor.

Fortix 2 -
you will get sick of the ring of steel on steel every time you click on something in this lil game. pretty simple puzzle game. you walk around making squares to capture land. you die if something touches you or your line while your making a square. point is to capture all the towers as quick as you can. amusing, but not for me.

The Polynomial -
dizzying, fractal based space light shooter with music. not sure how else to put it but you shoot evil black and red pacmen with a blue laser cannon and apparently your actions cause the music in the game, so i have no idea what i was doing wrong. kinda fun but yes i got very dizzy..pass

ProtoGalazy -
messed up top down space shooter, could not play it at all. someone else will have better luck. you have a laser cannon, missiles, shield i think, and a gravity beam to somehow throw stuff..didnt feel right, it said you could have 4 players coop, upgrade guns and the ship, lots of missions, but not much help and the oddest pink 3 layer clover leaf aiming retical i have ever seen

Vertex Dispenser -
interesing puzzle game with shapes fighting eachother to. capture triangles to conquer one big shape while battling the computer. couldnt really get into it, instructions are vague, very little music.

Zeit Squared - space shooter where your shields are your ammo and all enemies deplete that shield if you dont kill them and killing them uses up the shield with their life replenishing you. They really make this unique with the control of time, you can back it up shoot more or move to another spot and take out another group of baddis then keep going. cool concept, fun side scroller shooter. you feel like a bubble though. music reminds me of f-zero x.

System Protocol One -
another Tower Defense game! gotta love them. this one i couldnt get to enjoy because the tutorial is literally 70 pages of small paragraphs..not fun, i was bored by the time i started and the little blips and bleeps took away from it even more. the strategy is interesting, and very cool concept so i want to try it again for sure and see what this game is really made of. not turned away just yet.

Eufloria -
what in the world is this? take over asteroids with seedlings and make trees which produce more seedlings. apparently turns into a game of conquest against the computer. very like pleasant ambient music.. thats all i got on it really, not something i enjoy.

Super Laser Racer -
just like the top down dirt track arcade racer you would find at burger joints smile.gif except it's all digital light vehicles and you have some weapons, shield, and dubstep music. very amusing, easy and tough at the same time. worth 5 bucks but other bigger racing games will hold the interest more.

Osmos - peaceful bubble, reminds me of the flash game Fish. you get bigger by absorbing smaller bubbles, and die if something bigger eats you. an extra is that all movement takes away from your own mass which can be recovered if you get to it again. wonderful music, and they are very kind by providing the track and artist names.

Galcon Fuzion -
very straight forward strategy game, using little ships from multiple worlds you conquer all the worlds or just take over everything the enemy has. fun to think of different ways to mass up armie and use them. great lil game and good music to.

Do I enter this room hoping for a useful item or do I conserve my health and try to tackle this level's boss? Do I eat this pill knowing it could just as easily damage my stats as it can improve them? Do I sell my health for more damage? Do I trust my gut feeling that there's a hidden door here and potentially waste a bomb to find out? Those and many more questions you'd ask yourself while playing this game.
