Laptop stuck on boot screen, won't boot from DVD, restarts at HDD boot?

I got a laptop to repair, all I did was try to install Windows from inside the existing Windows.

Upon the restart which every installation does, it crashed and restarted.

Every time I try to boot from the HDD, I hear a beep and it restarts.

Every time I try to boot from the Windows DVD, it says "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." and then hangs if I press any key at all.

I can get in to the BIOS screen but I just can't boot from any CD / DVDs at all and I can't boot into the HDD. I've tried restoring BIOS settings but that didn't work, and I don't know how to clear the CMOS on this laptop.

Laptop: Asus A8H (1.6Ghz Celeron, 512MB RAM, 60GB IDE HDD)

Thanks for any answers.

First thing I would try is to boot from a Linux Live CD, maybe it doesn't like that DVD for some reason (sounds stupid but who knows). If it's not too much trouble you could remove the HDD and plug it in a known good rig to see SMART data and if it runs oke or if it is full of virus. Then Win or Linux can also be installed from USB, you could try that too.

Thanks a lot.
Although I didn't directly follow your advice, you reminded me how some older laptops don't like some newer DVDs.

I put in an XP DVD disc instead and it booted fine, the HDD might have been corrupted so I put that in my PC via an adapter and wiped it. Then I put it into the laptop again, booted from the XP disc and it's installing fine. I'll have to update to Vista and then update to Windows 7 through Vista perhaps, but it's only 512MB RAM so I'll either upgrade that or just stick with XP.

Thanks.
