how good is crossfire? can these crossfire? - Page 2

OK lets make this simple

You probably won't max out skyrim on xfire 5770's 6770s or any other deriviative of x770
post #12 of 25
Another thing to consider with Crossfire is your PSU, and motherboard, since you have not filled out your system info, and left those 2 crucial pieces out of your OP, we do not know what you are using.

If you have to buy a better PSU just to crossfire the hd6770, then that is a poor choice.

how would i make sure its the main rendering card?
When you crossfire 2 to 4 cards, only one will be the main rendering card. That is where the monitor(s) connected to the main card. The main card is normally in the first PCIe slot in the motherboard order. If you connected the other monitor to the secondary card, it will disable crossfire by default. Some motherboard will allow you to select which card as primary in crossfire setup, or in few cases in Hybrid setup. It means you have AMD and Nvidia cards mixed in one system (motherboard).

So in your case, if you crossfire 6770 + 5770, the 6770 should be the main rendering card or what we normally call primary card and it is where the monitor(s) plugged to. You can not put the 5770 as primary and 6770 as secondory.

So please don't get confused with nVidia cards in SLI and Multi Screens setup.

the 6770 and 5770 are essentially the same card tbh.

Im beginning to understand that. hehe the idea of selling the 5770 for the 6870 sounds like a very plausable idea I just wish I would've know how much better it was when I originally baught my graphics card...

Yeah, those look like they should be able to manage.

HD5770 crossfire performs around the same as a hd5870 at it's best. The hd5870 is faster than the hd6870. Your potential crossfire setup is not it's best performing scenario with your CPU, so I'm not even sure it would scale that high for you.

On top of that many users have low minimum framerate issues, (ie jerky gameplay), and driver headaches using lower end crossfire solutions. I cannot comment on that personally because I haven't used a crossfire setup, but google it, you'll see multiple threads, even a bunch on OCN.

I just think you would have less issues, and acceptable framerates with a hd6870, or any more powerful single GPU.

how about the 6850 instead of 6870 is there a whole lot of preformance difference? they seem to be $30 -$50 cheaper then the 6870s

old crossfire is just not worth it, if you are getting new cards and xfire it, then go for it. Otherwise, just sell the odd-card-out and buy a single newer card.
