GTX 580 Nightmare - Random black screens, "no video signal" HELP PLEASE...

Hello all

I have had this problem since August and do not know what to do. My GTX 580 randomly black screens and my monitor displays "no video signal". The sound continues fine and you can usually correct the problem by removing and reconnecting the displayport cable or it usually just goes back to desktop. However, things started getting worse and now I have to reboot to get the display back. This happens when I browse the net, listen to music, or watch videos in desktop. So basicall in idle. It seems to be fine when playing games so its not a temp problem. I have the latest 285.xx nVidia drivers and even reinstalled the OS (Windows 7). My setup is;

ASUS Maximus IV GENE-Z
Intel 2500k
16GB Corsair Vengence running at XMP
128GB M4 SSD
1000W Silverstone PSU
FT03
Asus GTX 580 DCUII

I have so many problems with it:

1. Black screen "no video signal" but the sound carries on in games...

2. Black screen's randomly and goes back to desktop while you are using the PC, i.e. while surfing the net...

3. Driver fail message: "nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered"...

Has anyone else experienced these problems before? I am desperate.

Thanks in advance.

If those are the beta drivers you may want to revert back to the official ones to see if that helps. Aside from that people are going to tell you to do a driver sweep then fresh install of the display drivers ( this often is not an issue). I would start looking a little closer at your monitor, see if you have another you can try.

Welcome to my world ... smile.gif

Here's my post about the same problems I'm having, along with a bunch of solutions I've already tried. Here

Rolling back drivers, making sure card isn't over-heating, etc etc.

do you have another 8pin power output from your psu? try swapping it. i had a similiar issue. i could of sworn it was a driver issue. it was my psu going bad.

here is my experience

This sounds a lot like a problem i had on a previous build it wasnt the same card or CPU but the problem sounds the same
And i found it to be my powersupply after a certain period of time it just kinda gave up....
if youve got one lying around its always worth a go

Hope it helps mate thumb.gif

Thanks for the reply friends!

Just to add:

The monitor is fine since my brother has been using it for a month with no problems.

I have tried both non beta 275.xx and 280.xx nVidia drivers to no avail. Both produce same problems.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 completely twice on 2 different SSDs and get the same problem.

I have been doing a lot of research and this seems to be a common problem with the Fermi cards across the 400 and 500 series. These cards throw up a conflict between the mobo and itself. Have a look here:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=187401&st=0

My cousin has been using my GTX 580 on his rig with no problems what so ever HOWEVER his old GTX 460 Hawk gave him the exect same problems as I. And NOW this GTX 460 Hawk works great on my other cousins rig. It appears that nVidia cards only work with specific mobo/ chipset drivers.

I arrive back home in a week and will test my rig again with my old ATI 5870. If I have zero problems then there is ultimately compatibility problems with Fermi cards. I'll update in a few weeks. Looks like ATI is the safest option....

Is your wire plugged in securely and nothing is bent or loose? I had an issue like this and a simple replugging fixed it.

Hello.

Yes, all cables have been checked and are securely fastened.

I need to add I have these problems mostly when NOT gaming. It happens in desktop, when idle. I do not believe this is a PSU issue.

What is your GTX 580's core voltage at idle (50MHz)?
Have you tried to increase idle voltage?

I had this same issue with a gtx470, RMA'd the card, and the issue went away. It was annoying, and I hate to RMA, but after being frustrated for months I gave in and did it.
