Revision 1 cards have a backplate, there's a lot of other differences as well, but that's the obvious tell tale sign.
Personally I would not trust the pictures on Newegg if that is what you are doing. I would play it safe and order the card first and check for yourself. I myself ordered an XFX 6970 and thought I was good ordering my Swiftech block because the chart I read had only one version. well I got my card and block and they were not compatable. I then when to Swiftech's site and checked their chart (which I should have done to begin with) and the XFX card had 2 versions.

Only thing that saved me is that the Swiftech block has interchangeable VRM piece to convert it from rev1 to rev2, so I was able to fix my mistake for $20

Anyway as I was saying Newegg takes pictures of one card, and XFX changed revisions somewhere but under the same model number so Newegg will only have pictures that fit 1 of the 2 types of card they may ship you.

here is the block I got http://www.swiftech.com/KOMODO-HD6900.aspx#tab4 and if you have a Micro Center near by they have it on sale for $99

Considering NO ONE is making Volterra revision 1 cards of any kind right now... hell since March it's safe to assume all new cards are either revision 2 or a full custom like the Lightning or DCII.

BTW, it was AMD that changed the reference design and everyone has to follow suit.
