Large HDDs- RAID 5

Thread Starter
I'm looking for (4) 3tb HDD's for under $400.

Requirements:
Must be 7200PM
Have good Ratings
Good Reliability
$100 USD per HDD.

Also, I'm thinking about using this to put them in RAID 5 and hook them up to my laptop. If I put (4) 3tb drives in raid 5 I would get 8.3tb of usable disk space.

Can I use 3tb HDD's with this enclosure?

Would raid 5 produce decent speeds over USB 3.0?

Thanks OCN
-Brandon

Raid 5 really shines if you have a good controller and fast drives... Raid 5 is known for speed and versatility if I remember correctly. A USB3 box will not use the drives to the maximum, but a single 500 GB HDD can max out a USB 3 connection and youre putting 4x 3TB drives together... you do the math I don't see why the disks shouldn't work in that cabinet.

Any 3TB from a notable brand would do. Personally I have had good experience with both Seagate and WD. Does your laptop have thunderbolt?

I dont think a single 500GB HDD has the speed to max out usb 3.0 because usb 3.0 is 5gbs where as SATA2 is only 3gbs and most hdd's dont even max that out.

It does not have thunderbolt, its got damn near everything else.

2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0,1x Headphone,1x Microphone, HDMI, VGA, mini-display port, SD card reader....
