Custom Made SMD LED Light Panel

Thread Starter

I made a light panel using 5 colors of SMD LEDs and 30 LEDs total that runs of a 3 pin fan header on the mobo. I use it in this video to demonstrate lighting of an acrylic reservoir I made.

There are many colors of LED available. I can put together a light panel to your specification that is intensely bright, has a low draw, and does not create heat like CCL tubes.

Obviously this sort of lighting is not limited to reservoir lighting, but can be used to spot light or illuminate any part of your PC.

The UV lighting is very strong compared to some CCL tubes I have tested and creates a more intense glow from UV reactive parts.

Mixing light colors allows for a lot of in between colors that are not available in LED like pink, magenta, aqua, teal, light blue, light green, grass green, butterscotch. etc. Mixing say yellow and orange will yield a lighter brighter orange than a typical LED orange color, likewise mixing red and yellow yields a different orange than an orange LED.

I am fascinated by lighting effects with acrylic and try out new things all the time. I would be happy to build a lighting effect for you. PM to discuss.

If you can resist the standard Urge/Overkill response LC can be fun and won't give you buyer's remorse.

The typical response is to buy the largest radiator on the market, dozens of expensive BP rotary and compression fittings, not just a pump but all the gizmos to dress up the pump etc...

If it's something you might like but are on the fence about start with solid core components, but don't go crazy on fittings and accessories. You can always tinker later.

I've found a single 140mm rad will keep a quad in check even overclocked and loaded to the max. At one point I ran three quads off on PA160 just to see how that worked. It was less effective than 3 expensive air coolers or a larger rad, but it did work.

Same with tube ID...no need for firehoses...3/8" works great.

It's mainly the blocks, pump and the rad/fan package where you will want good quality stuff. That way as you tinker and upgrade you don't have to buy a better core of LC gear.

CD, you have to experiment with FTIR with acrylic, it is endless fun.

I'm actually quite surprised that I haven't seen any of your work using FTIR.

I ran across that a few years back and I am fascinated with it, but I just haven't had the drive to experiment with it yet. So many things I want to do.

Last night I rolled the PC out from under the desk and was amazed to find the SMD light panel was blasting colored light through the acrylic grill on the top and that was painting the wall in a laser crisp tattoo of light. Really trippy looking. Gave me an idea for what to do with those masses of laser cut grills I still have in storage... A mobile that throws light patterns all over the room.
