Faster HDD than WD caviar black?

Thread Starter
Hi

I'm going to get a 1TB HDD and am currently looking at the WD caviar black 1TB.

Is there a faster 1TB 3.5" HDD on the market?

Thanks

The WD caviar Black is pretty good, but is it just for data storage or OS as well? Personally I would not reccomend 1TB for OS & data, single point of failure.
If just for storage then how important is speed exactly? If your that concerned with speed then get 2 x 500GB in RAID 0.
To answer your questions, I am not sure about a faster drive, possibly the Samsung Spinpoint F3 but that only has a 32MB cache vs the Blacks 64MB. Unless the improvement was massive I would choose the WD, better customer care and reliability. I have hundreds of F3s at work and am not impressed with their reliability at all.

Blacks going to be the fastest spindle drive without going to a velociraptor, which I wouldn't bother with since its extra cost isnt really justifiable.
Go for a Spinpoint F3, it outperforms even velociraptor drives. Plus it's not as expensive as the wd drives. I suggest putting them in RAID, awesome with em.

The performance difference of any platter drive above the Caviar Black is going to be negligible. It's not anything like what you'd get jumping to an SSD where the difference will blow you away.

I always see F3s recommended purely based on benchmarks where they show the Samsungs edging out the WDs in certain tests by a couple MB/s. F3s aren't as reliable as the Caviar Black, so I'd just go with the WD.

The new Hitachi is a BEAST. Faster than an F3 by a decent margin.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145533

I would grab that Hitachi or an F3 no question. I love my F3, it is a tremendous drive, but the Hitachi is looking GREAT.

I strongly disagree. I'm running a 1TB drive in my server rig for over 2 years now and never had problems with any of em. I just kicked out an smaller 250GB F3 but it's still intact ;D

I sure agree that WD drives are also reliable, because I have 4 external wd elements drives in use.

Both great hdds, whichever you pick, you're not doing anything wrong.

Lets see what the hitachis have to offer.

No they don't.

I'd be looking at the Hitachi 7K1000.D; there's no reviews/benchmarks yet, but we know they'll be fast due to the new 1TB platters in them.

This is quite likely. But until I see benchmarks, I can't say how much faster they are.

And nobody will know how reliable they are for many months.

That's not as strong a vote of confidence as you'd think.

Every WD drive I've ever had (minus the two I disqualified) has out-lasted the warranty by many many years. Some over a decade. My Raptor is about 8 years old now... used daily.

I've had two drive failures with WD, but I blame those two on being in Canada - Newegg packed them poorly, and 3-days of UPS ground shipping beat them up real good. And then I believed some posters here that mounting drives upside down (in an HTPC case) was okay - they started making funky noises pretty fast, and only worked for a few months. Finally my two WD20EARS died and were returned to WD.

The replacements have been perfect - but they were not shipped by UPS, and were not packaged by Newegg. Of the three drives I bought at Newegg, 100% have failed. Of the many dozens I bought at NCIX, only one has failed... that certainly tells me where Canadians should be shopping for HDDs - closer warehouses matter!

Anyway, ramble aside - Hitachi 7K1000.D, F3 1TB (HD103SJ), WD1002FAEX. Look them up, examine the prices of each, then figure out which you want. The WD1002FAEX has very fast seeking, so as an OS drive it performs very well. (probably faster than the other two - sequential speeds matter less for an OS/Apps drive than access times, and they matter more for storage drives)

I've been using Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB's for a long while now, especially when I bought them from $45 to $55 per drive (I've used over 32 of them). I can provide benchmarks in single, RAID 0, 1, and 10, if anyone wants to compare benchmarks.
