What CPU should I get? BD, Thuban- other

Thread Starter
Alright, so I had high hope for Bulldozer. Apparently it is lackluster for the money and other options. This new build was going to be my wife's computer. So lets judge based on needs and use.

My wife is a graphic and product designer. So naturally she uses a lot of memory and may have multiple programs open at once (photoshop, indesign, illustrator, etc.). She also plays games (left 4 dead 1/2, cod, starcraft 2, shogun 2 total war.

What would you aim to buy for a cpu? Sandy Bridge, BD, Thuban.

Thanks. Oh... I have most thins for her computer in regards to other parts.

Definitly a i7-2600 because she will take advantage of hyperthreading
post #3 of 42
Stick with a 1090T or 965BE. I don't think she'll need anything super crazy like a intel i7 2500K. Will she be a power user? I'm not sure if graphic design relies more on GPU or CPU.

Edit: Budget?

i72600k would be the best she can get. the price is not insanely high anyways. if you dont plan overclocking or anything...

i7 2500k / 2600k depending on the budget, easily the best CPUs around at a really good price points.
Thuban or SB would be a good choice, just for the love of God stay away from BD if you can.

I would almost recommend going with the i5 2500 (k or not up to you if you want to overclock) as my fiancee essentially in the past has done the same kind of work as your wife as well as gaming and she's been extremely happy with the speed of her system. Her system is a 2500k overclocked to 4GHz with a 6870 (you could probably do better with an nvidia graphics card which is optimized for photoshop)

Adobe product are highly threaded so the more you can process them, faster it is and you lose less time waiting (more productive). GPU has nothing to do with working with graphic editing

+1 for the 2600k. Or even the 2600.

But for $10 more you can have overclocking headroom for better/faster performance.

This is actually not true, for the past few years now Adobe Photoshop actually has the ability to use the gpu, allow you to speed up rendering and other graphical alterations one may be doing to a photo.
