INTEL Q9550 Overclocking question

Thread Starter
I have never overclocked before and just wanna know if this CPU will be worth overclocking. Also i have just got a GTX 560 TI Twin Frozr ii and im playing crysis 2 on ultra with dx11 on but it cant handle the high res texture pack. Was wondering about the msi afterburner software.

Q9550's were/are one of Intel's "Golden" Core 2 Quads and can do some pretty impressive things. With the right motherboard that chip could (all comes down to luck of the draw) hit 4+ GHz relatively easy.

You have good cooling and a very nice gpu... What motherboard is that, though..? Do you have a link to the specific board?

I'm not the most knowledgeable of overclockers here but, I'm going to say a mobo based on the P45 chipset would be your best bet at that chip reaching it's full potential.

you could probably hit 4GHz on that, but i wont guarantee anything... much higher then 4GHz will probably be prity hard on that board... 9550s are great chips... people got above 4.5GHz in some cases on water (never seen any extreme cooling benches of them now that i think about it)... even at 4GHz these are beasts though... you should have no problems... as for afterburner... i would definitely give it a try... couldn't hurt (assuming you dont give the card too much voltage )... people get some prity good increases out of those with OCing... never used on my self so i cant say for sure, but thats what i have heard at least... well, good luck

I'm going to be honest here: I'm not at all familiar with that mobo.

Does the BIOS allow control over the fsb and voltages..? I'm not even sure if it's capable of oc'ing.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to chime in on your situation, though. Just hang in there. Subscribe to the thread and keep an eye on it for responses.

Sorry I couldn't be more help but, I don't want to suggest you try something and have you damage your motherboard.

Afterburner is pretty straightforward and good software like eskamobob1 says. Head on over to the NVidia section and have a peek at some of the threads. The Search Box up there is tied into OCN so if you type in GTX 560 TI TWIN FROZR II overclocking the search results will be relevant to your query here on OCN.

I'd definitely look into using After Burner for your gpu.

Good luck.

I doubt he can hit 4ghz on that board... I have a Maximus Formula board and have a hard time keeping it stable at 4ghz with a Q9650 unless I flash to the Rampage Formula BIOS

I'm pretty sure he can get 3.4 to 3.6ghz fairly easily however

Thanks for all all the help guys. I may try and get it to 3.4ghz i would be happy with that. Im gonna upgrade to a i7 2600k and a Z68 in january hopefully. I have overclocked the GPU with afterburner and it now runs crysis 2 wtih DX11 and high res reasonably smoothly.Im gonna keep playing with the core clock and try to get some better framerates and keep the GPU temp below 70'c.
