Gtx 580 twin frozr II in Fractal R3

Hey guys,

Had to RMA my 580 the other day cuz it was getting 97C but that was cuz they prolly forgot the paste.

Anyway got a new one put it into my Fractal R3 and ran it, got max 85C after a while cuz of the warm air build up.

Running 2x fractal in the front. Have a Antec 620 as the only out.

Would you guys recommend 2x 140 MM fractal fans one side and one top, prolly have the side fan as in and top fan out.

How would you guys set this up in the fractal ? Since it definetly needs more fans.

-Block rearmost top slot.
-Install a 140mm fan in the frontmost top slot intaking fresh air. (A non sleeve bearing fan)
-Install a 140mm or 120mm fan in the bottom slot to help bring in fresh air to your gpu.
-Install a 140mm fan to the side to bring in additional fresh air to your graphics card.
-Remove the extra pci slot covers to aid in the escape of air pressure coming from the bottom/front/top/side.

All the intake air will only be able to escape from the back, the pressure won't allow exhaust from your 580 to linger in your case and the additional intake will assist your Antec 620 which I imagine is getting some of that heated exhaust from your 580.

This should help drop temperatures in your case a good deal. I have a similar cooling setup in my Nzxt Source 210 and it runs as cool as can be .

I have a similar setup. The 140mm bottom intake didn't do much, but I found adding just the 140mm side exhaust cured all my temp problems.

If silence is not a priority, by all means add all the fans...

The Fractal came with the fan controller, so ill just throw them on that and go 100% during games and when idling ill turn it down.

Thnx for the suggestions.

Btw tried just plain old convection, threw every possible hole open saved me 5+ C so some more airflow tuning and I should be good. Else Ill return it and get a rear exhaust videocard.

Did a test, opened the case unscrewd everything to make as many holes as possible in the case. Stuck a MASSIVE roomfan infront of the case, got max temp of 69C. Then I closed to case and had the fan right infront of the side intake. Only fans inside the case are still the Antec CPU cooler as out and the two 1k rpm fractal in the front. Also didnt get above 69C.

This is in BC2 with seriously everything maxed out, exept for Vsync cuz that couyld lower GPU usage.

So Im guessing with a good 140 MM side intake and some outtake in the top im thinking I have this sorted.

Currently have two silent Fractal 140 mm fans comming my way but im afraid does wont cut it. They have 39 CFM at max. Best bet would prolly be 140mm fans which can be ramped up alot higher and have them on a fan controller for idle usage.

Seems to be the best option to have a side intake blowing onto the video card and add one or two top exhausts. Im not getting any lower then 69 and thats in a room which is about 18-22C.
