GTX 580 Power Consumption - Page 2

"Our test system is based on a power hungry Core i7 965 / X58 system. This setup is overclocked to 3.75 GHz. Next to that we have energy saving functions disabled for this motherboard and processor (to ensure consistent benchmark results). On average we are using roughly 50 to 100 Watts more than a standard PC due to higher CPU clock settings, water-cooling, additional cold cathode lights etc.

Keep that in mind. Our normal system power consumption is higher than your average system."

System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 447W From the wall
source

If you take into account PSU efficiency, say 85%, the actual power drawn by the full system from the PSU would be 379w, add around 150w for the rest of the system and that would be just aroudn 500w. So you have plenty of room to overclock the crap out that gpu without facing any problems and on that note, a quality 550w would be upto the task. Your PSU should be fine.

That should be enough to power my rig, right? Considering I just spent $500 on a video card, I dont really have the budget to spend another $100+ on a new PSU.
There is more than enough power.

NVIDIA recommends a power supply that has a peak capacity of 600W, but the 650W TruePower Trio has a peak capacity that's over 700-750w. It is able to continuously deliver 650W, and its +12V capacity is 52A which is 624W (which happens to be the same as my HX650).

Also, Guru3D.com was able to get their test system to pull 447W from the wall outlet with the GTX 580 under full load (source). This means that the system pulled about 380W from the PSU. However, Guru3D.com also recommends adding about 100W-150W in order to account for the rest of the system which brings us to 480W to 530W being pulled from the PSU at the extreme most. So this is why NVIDIA recommends a PSU that has a peak capacity of 600W.
