amd payed per good dies for this gen ... making it a per cpu sold basis
if amd can sell out alot of server cpu's they will deffinatly make up for their total R&D ... that cray deal is worth how much ???
add on top the other server sales + desktop sales to wich we wont know until a while ...
how much transistors is on a die is stupid ... it's all about how you use em ... and if amd needed to do their core like this for future use ... then so be it ...
and if amd's schedule of improvement is really on a yearly basis and never skips a beat it is still better then the amd of the past ...
so planning ahead is what they do ... they did mess up with bulldozer .. but in the long run this new architecture does have some strong point
