Network Settings Dont Match???

Right i have a VERY annoying problem, i am using an Alfa USB wifi adapter which works VERY well and i can use our network with ease and not have it die every 5seconds.

Only problem is i have to press the button on the router to join it, enter the password and it says its wrong even though i have changed the password and COPIED the EXACT characters used and still says it is wrong

The problem here is when ever i shut down the computer and restart it i will NOT be able to connect to the router as it will say something about the settings dont match and so i have to go into my list of wifi connections and delete the connection before i can try to connect again

Here comes the annoying part it AGAIN goes on about how the password is wrong and i have to press the button on the router, this wouldnt be so much of an issue if it worked first time, it takes 5-10 attempts of pressing the button (other side of house) for it to connect again

This happens EVERY time i Disconnect, though its rarely and every time i shut the computer down. i have NO idea why it does this but it is SERIOUSLY annoying having to up and down the house for like 20minutes just to get connection to the internet

1. It is a problem and I am not sure right now where the fault lies. Tentatively the router is probably the issue but uncertain at this point.

2. Workaround: Rather then use the button at all, go in and set up the key in security section of router then tell the computer you want to attach manually and enter the key yourself. That should resolve it.

I dont think its a router problem, it started when i got the new Wifi "booster" which i had no choice but to get, and too be fair minus this VERY big annoyance it works very well.

I have gone into the router and changed the password and then copied that password and entered it when i tried to connect, nothing continues to state "incorrect Password" which clearly isnt true seeing as i copied it and pasted it, No way is the password wrong.

Only thing i can think of, it maybe making it so it doesnt require a key but it is hidden. I doubt that many people will be trying to hack it anyway but better safe then sorry

1. Alpha wifi usb adaptor

2. name of booster

3. name and type of router (is bios flashed)

Let me know the names and types of each of the pieces involved. You say other side of the house for distance, about how far, how many walls and is it different floors? Just trying to get a picture in my mind of what your dealing with so i can maybe figure a plan of action.

Alternative security work around: Clear all security settings then set up so that only computers in the approved MAC address database can connect. Make sure you first add your mac address to the settings. Also make sure it is set to connect, NOT DENY. Most routers they are right next to each other so it's easy to click the wrong one.

If you hit deny and approve then you have to either connect via cable to reset it correctly or reset the whole router back to factory. smile.gif Both are a pain so I give forwarning.

1. I realize this does not resolve the issue. it's a temporary work around.

2. I also realize this is not as secure ie... easier to hack. Your own statement leads me to believe the majority this is not an issue then. Reality is, if someone wanted in, they could get in so we are just keeping the generally honest folks honest.

3. Doing this will suck if you have people in and out of your system, lan parties etc...

Like I said though, it is a short term solution while we try to figure out the other.

the USB Booster is called "Alfa AWUSO36NH" the router is new and is a D-Link DS-2680 and it was set to WPA/WPA-2(Auto), Channel 6. It is currently set to no password with SSID hidden until i can find a way to fix the problem.

I dont THINK its likely that it being hacked would be much of a issue, with several open networks and several other closed networks in the area. Thats why i have gone with my current work around but as its not my network, its my landlords so would like to find a full safe (password protected) solution as it seems to not like passwords

I havent done anything like MAC filtering before and as its not my own network i wouldnt really want to to mess around with it as too many people come and go with laptops and such to make MAC filtering to be that much of an option

I have been doing google searches etc... trying to see what might ring a bell so to speak. Your D-Link is pretty straight forward from everything I can tell. Should not make a difference but is it up to date on BIOS??? Just something to think about.

On the Alpha, again nothing sticks out as to be problematic or such. Tell me about how you have to set it up etc... What drivers are you using?

Yeah i have been looking as well with no luck, both the router and the Alfa are under 2weeks old, the router was sent by TalkTalk to replace the old router that was dying, only things changed on it are the Channel its on (moved from 1 to 6) and the now the password and making it Hidden and not to require any password

The Alfa i used the Disc that came with it and the software seemed to install fine. Once connected i dont seem to have the problem, its getting connected when it requires a password that seems to be the problem
