Q9550 OC, Help! - Page 2

After about 6 hours of prime95 100% load my temps are stable at 64/53/54/62 and they peaked to 68 max for a little while. And under no load they are about 5 degree's higher on average, 40/31/35/39

The Q9550 was a beast back in the day especially coupled with a P45 ud3p board. I ran mine at 4ghz for a 24/7 clock, although I have benched it a bit higher than that.

Your temps look pretty good. You still have some headroom to play with as far as temps. I would definitely try raising FSB up a little more at least until you find max FSB at current settings. I think you could hit 3.8 possibly 4ghz, although 4ghz may require a bit more juice and few more tweaks here and there.

Looking good Kasper. Temps look good.

Like Valafar said, you have some headroom to go upwards it seems. Creep the fsb up by about 10 MHz at a time until it doesn't post and see how far you get with those settings. Just keep an eye on the RAM speed, don't let it get away from you; you don't want to have to troubleshoot two things at once (cpu & RAM) while you get the max cpu fsb.

Once you hit an unstable fsb, back down a bit and test it again. Then you can maybe tweak the refs and stabilize it at an even higher clock. I'll come back and link you some stuff to read about setting the Ref Voltages in a bit.

It's looking good though, good job.

Thanks, and thank you both for the help. I see substantial increases in performance across all my games. Do you think my cpu running at 2.8ghz was bottlenecking my 6870 gpu? I really don't know how all that works but was just wondering.

Depending on the game, resolution, and other graphical settings used it could have. Generally at 1080P and newer games that have proper multithreading support it becomes less of an issue with single gpu setups. Some games, Oblivion and Fallout series come to mind, are just poorly optimized, while RTS games do favor faster cpus due to the many calculations that run in the background. As long as you see 100% usage on the gpu you are not bottlenecking the gpu.

If run into any problems, have any questions, don't be afraid to ask around. Welcome to OCN, btw.
