What's a good TV Tuner for $50 or less? - Page 2

We have a main cable that was installed by the cable company, just like anyone does that has cable. It is then split under the house to different rooms. One Room has a cable box for HDTV and premiums. I am not trying to get those channels. In my room, I just have the basic TV cable going into a tube TV's coaxial port. All I get are your basic channels you get without a cable box. Fox, CBS, ESPN, Disney, MTV, ect ect.

What I want to do is: have the cable go into my PC VIA a TV tuner or whatever, that then allows me to watch these channels on my PC.

As a bonus, I'd also like to get the free HD channels like Fox separately from an antenna if possible, for football games.

---------

What I am assuming is the cable that goes into my TV is not encrypted right? Isn't the point of a cable box to decrypt signals? So I'd assume a TV like mine, only has a basic TV tuner, correct?
So you are trying to hook the cable that does not have a cable box into the TV tuner is that correct? What TV model is that? HVR-1250 should be okay in this situation, assuming those channels are unencrypted.

No clue. Some Toshiba. It's a tube TV with only coaxial and front yellow/white A/V.

Okay. I'm pretty sure Hauppauge HVR-1250 (PCIe x1) will work in your case. Just remember you won't be able to watch premium channels or on-demand with it. Like I said HVR-1250 can be bought $50 brand new or $30 on ebay.

If you want to watch or record 2 channels simultaneously you will need either Avert Duet or HVR-2250, with price tag of $70 and $120 respectively.

Thanks a bunch! Are there any specs on these I should look for?

When you buy a TV tuner you are really looking at,

* Does it have NTSC (Analog) support?
This does not matter to those who use TV antenna to watch free local channels, as US broadcast stations now use digital signals instead. Some cable companies still use analog signal so without it you can't watch those channels.

* Does it have ATSC (Digital) support?
Any modern TV tuner should have this support. Do NOT buy a TV tuner that does not have ATSC support. ATSC is important to those who are using TV antenna because US broadcast stations now use digital signals. Many cable companies now are also using digital signal as well. That shows you how important ATSC support is.

* Does it have ClearQAM (unencrypted cable channel) support?
This is for those who are using cable services; this does not matter to those who use TV antenna to watch free local channels. Having ClearQAM means you can watch cable channels minus premium channels and on-demand. ClearQAM stacks with NTSC/ATSC. Having ClearQAM + NTSC means you can watch analog unencrypted cable channels; ClearQAM + ATSC means you can watch digital unencrypted cable channels.

* PCI, PCIe x1, USB, or Ethernet TV tuner?
PCI and PCIe x1 TV tuners are internal tuners. They are the fastest TV tuner. They rarely drops frames and can switch a channel very fast.
Ethernet TV tuner (such as SiliconDust HDHomeRun) hooks up to a router. Allows you to use multiple computers to share a single TV tuner.
USB TV tuner offers flexibility and portability. You should avoid USB TV tuner unless you need it. They are the slowest and can drop frames occasionally.

* CableCARD tuner?
With CableCARD, you can watch premium channels on your TV as well. Your cable provider needs to provide you a CableCARD. You insert CableCARD into your CableCARD tuner and hook up coxial cable into the tuner.

* Dual Tuner support?
Hybrid tuner =/= Dual tuner. Dual tuner means you can
--> watch and record 2 different channels at the same time.
--> watch 2 different channels at the same time.
--> record 2 different channels at the same time.

For you need, I recommend Hauppauge HVR-1250. It is a single TV tuner with NTSC, ATSC, and ClearQAM support.

Hey, one last question. Do you nkow the difference between these two tuners, besides the remote?

Hauppauge HVR-1850 is a hybrid tuner. Hauppauge HVR-2250 is a dual tuner.

As I said before hybrid tuner is NOT the same as dual tuner.

With Hauppauge HVR-1850,
--> watch and record 2 different channels at the same time.
--> watch 2 different channels at the same time.
--> record 2 different channels at the same time.
--> But one channel must be analog and one channel must be digital at any given time.

With Hauppauge HVR-2250,
--> watch and record 2 different channels at the same time.
--> watch 2 different channels at the same time.
--> record 2 different channels at the same time.
--> You can have 2 digital channels, 2 analog channels, or 1 digital and 1 analog channel at any given time

HVR-1800 and HVR-1850 is overpriced and should be avoided. You should pick either HVR-1250 or HVR-2250.

Since you're still here. Are there any alternatives or anything better than the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 for around the same price, or is this the best?
