Does 1GB make a Difference?

Im building a new gaming rig and im looking into the radeon 6870 for double CrossFire or 6970 Single

But then i notice that there are 2 different cards, one by visiontek with 1GB memory and another by XFX with 2GB memory. The core clock and other clocks are a bit less and the price is higher but i dont mind that at all.

would there be much of a difference in games like crysis, dirt 3, and BF3

It all depends, if you crossfire, your missing out on 2GB, which in turn, yes. but I'm not sure on how much of a scale.
I reccommend getting a 580 that has good overclocking abilities since 3D (first hand experience) is absoulty amazing.

But in my opinion just one 6970 is good enough, so go for the 2GB

I doubt it, i think it only matters for very high res or more than one monitor.

Not sure if you mean crossfire each seperately or both together as you can not crossfire a 6870 with a 6970.

If seprately then definately the 6970 2GB.

games are starting to utilize more VRAM at high res with AA, with crossfire for you it may make a difference in some games.

In rage, definitely. Though a lot of people are having trouble with AMD cards with that game.

I'd say just get a single 6970, then if you actually think you need more power pick up a second when the 7000 series cards come out.

BF3 took up to 1.7GB of vram on my system... so take that into account if you want to play newer games. The 1gb might hold you back *this was at 1080p

Yea, if you're going to drive things that will use that much power (ATI's version of supersampling, perhaps?), then you'll want the 2GB for sure. On any game that has settings above "console" I exceed 1GB of VRAM usage.

I just got Metro 2033 on steam for $5 and playing it using just my single unlocked and OC 6950 @ 1080p, I just put it on max settings with AAA and it gets 30-40FPS in gameplay yet the vram is at 1100-1250MB usage in the prologue. Granted even with 1gb vram you will probably won't see much FPS drops, why not just spend the few bucks to get the 2GB to play it safe.
