Ok. I've been looking around google and it looks like the reason one core lags behind is that they system still needs a core to operate. So it "steals" the core to run background tasks. The good thing is that it seems to be bouncing the tasks around.


I don't know how I feel about having my computer run at ~60C under 100% load. That's why I'm asking. Of course, that brings up the question as to whether or not all "load" is the same, or are there different types of stresses that a CPU can be under.

I only turn the fans up when I am stress testing. Although, I haven't stress tested in a very very long time, so it's been very quiet for a very very long time.

I only need to keep my fans at about 1400 RPM to have a nice balance between keeping my temps low and minimizing dust build-up.

Last question for the night: Is there a way to have RealTemp shut my computer down if the processor reaches TJmax (get it! The store? )? I noticed it had a batch file for shutting down, but how do I activate this?

~60C (~40C distance to tjmax) is damn cool for on-die temps under load.

My limit (assuming on-die temps and a fairly accurate tjmax setting in my monitoring software) is upwards of 90C, during stress testing.

No.

A single thread can only be executed on a single core at a time. It can't be chopped up and distributed between cores/processors. It can be moved from processor to processor, but the OS should not do this without good reason as doing so hurts performance and wastes power.

The TM Frio is a slightly better cooler that needs less airflow than the CM 212+ to move the same amount of heat.

I am not sure if Realtemp can do this, but most BIOSes have such an option. Also, as soon as you come within a few degrees of TJmax, the CPU should signal PROCHOT and throttle, meaning it won't get any hotter unless you've disabled thermal management and/or bi-directional PROCHOT. Furthermore, all recent Intel processors will shut down entirely if they ever reach 125C, and there is no way to disable this.

The CPU will do it automatically because the sensors get more and more accurate as the temp gets closer and closer to the Tj. Max. If the Tj. Max is reached, then the CPU turns itself off and you wake up to a system that is powered off. Either that, or it throttles itself down (which it might attempt first - either way, there's not much to worry about).

So that's the real reason why these CPUs have sensors, except Intel has decided to make them more accurate for overclockers even in the idle ranges. With older CPUs, stuck sensors were common where the sensor wouldn't show anything lower than like 38°C or so. So you can see how much Intel has improved them for our use.

Anyway, I admit that every single time I type "Tj. Max", I think of that store. So if you ever see me say "Thermaljunction Maximum", then that is me making sure a new guy doesn't think I mean the store. lol


Edit: or maybe it's 125°C. Either way, I'm not worried about it in the least bit.

Your voltage is low, your load temps are very very cool, and the only way for these things to change is if you change them. So, you're good.

We're on a long train of overclockers who've been doing it this way for years: they start the test and go to bed.

I've stressed tested dozens and dozens of times, and each time I leave my computer unattended for 12 hours or more.
