Silverstont TJ08-E vs Fractal Define Mini for quiet mATX performance?

Thread Starter
Daydreaming a bit about my next build. I'm strongly considering mATX for convenience's sake, and I'd prefer it to be much quieter than my current machine. As such, I'm considering either the Silverstone TJ08-E or the Fractal Define Mini case. I'm a HUGE Fractal fan, as I love the R3 I'm using right now, I just wish it were smaller and quieter -- so the Mini gets a natural nod in that direction. However, I've also seen a review video recently for the TJ08-E, and the 180mm fan at the front seems great in regards to cooling and acoustics, and the design of the case is intriguing.

So, I was wondering if anyone has any input into either of these two cases. How have they been for you in terms of acoustics and cooling effectiveness?

To be honest, the Silverstone doesn't look at all appealing to me, so I'd pick the Fractal.

However, I'm kind of on a Lian-Li kick, so the PC-A04B would probably be my mini tower of choice.

I own the TJ08-E and I can tell you it's extremely quiet with the fans turned down. You can see the specs in my sig. I run it basically 24/7, so when I leave it running at night in my room for downloading, the loudest thing I can hear is my hard drive making almost inaudible noises...THATS IT. I'd recommend the TJ08-E to anyone looking for a solid m-atx case. Its a little finicky to work with since its so small but it cleans up very nicely if you take your time.

Both will fit the big, quiet dual-tower coolers with the TJ08 having more headroom. Both are set up for 'positive' airflow. Both have USB3. Both can remove the HDD bay. Both are steel-bodied cases.

The Fractal has fan mounts for 2x 120mm front intakes, 1x 120/140mm side intake, 1x 120mm bottom intake, 1x top 120/140mm exhaust, and 1x rear 120mm exhaust for cooling. It also has a noise damping lining inside. The TJ08 has 1x 180mm front intake and 1x 120mm rear exhaust for cooling.

Honestly, I'd pick the Fractal every time. It has much better cooling and options for cooling; several 1000rpm Gentle Typhoons and Noiseblocker Multiframes trump one AP181 for cooling-to-noise. I'm pretty sure the Fractal can fit a 260 radiator up front, too, if you went the watercooling route.

SPCR gave the editors choice to the SilverStone Temjin TJ08-E: MicroATX Evolved. Its a good case, the only noisy thing is the frontal fan, even at low settings (900rpm) is still to noisy for me, but i drop it down to 600rpm with a Zalman Fanmate 2 and its pretty good there.

I dont doubt the fractal is good case, nor the ability to be a good quiet case, but personally didnt like the Fractal fans at all, you can undervolt them with the included fan controller, but to me they are just not good fans. If you go this route i would swap them with Scythe Slipstreams PWM, this fans run from 200rpm to 1300rpm, you can control them via bios/software if your mobo has 4pin pwm fan control. Noiseblockers have also good pwm fans, but almost double the price, i have some running on my TJ08E and really good fans also if you want to drop more $$$.

I think both a good cases, go for the one you like the most, both should perform good.
