Intel NOOB!

Thread Starter
I'm such a nooby on intel stuff its just tragic. I'm pretty up clear on intel CPU's namely the i7-2600K which i'm thinking about getting but I'm a little confused on the chipsets:
What are the different chipsets?
which chipsets are newer?
is there a general pros and cons for the "newer' chipsets that seem to be sharing space on the market at the moment?
Also:
socket 1155 & 1156, where do they stand in the grand scheme of things?
thank you all and i want to build a gaming rig so if you have suggestions that would be the direction to lean in.

All I've got to say screw what chip-set it is their releasing a new set of cpu's in a few weeks or months but the i5 2500k or the i7 2600k are really great cpu's price /performance wise the i5 is better since it can overclock just as much and it's an awesome CPU for the price.

you wont find anything better, but the new AMD FX 8150 outperforms this and it has 8 cores doesn't outperform it BY TOO MUCH but by a nice margin, but it also costs more consumes more power and so on...

You're sig rig seems really good TBH, an i5 2500k (sandy bridge socket 1155) would be an improvement but for me its not worth it considering what you have there.

In order to overclock you need a P67 or Z68 motherboard. 1155 is SB and is alive and well. 1156 is dead and is no longer used by Intel.

Z68 allows you to use the IGP and has SSD caching (google it) P67 is just a basic chipset that does not allow use of the IGP or SSD caching.

Another upside of being able to use the integrated graphics processor on Z68 chipsets, is your reduced power consumption! was reported around 50watts, but I have not actually gone out of the way to verify that number. anyways, Z68!

I gotta agree with andrewmchugh, considering your current rig I wouldn't grab a Sandy now, why not wait for Ivy ?

This ^
Or are you building a new computer for someone else? If so go with the 2500k and a good quality Z68 board.

Actually my new rig is what I'm planning for. I have settled on two 6990's, plus a couple of other things.

You're welcome;) That's about it but for RAM get 1600mhz. I will be able to help with you're psu choice later on once you know all of you're parts.biggrin.gif

Edit: I would get a Asrock Gen3 mobo IMO.

I actually already have a new AX1200 and a HX1000 from my current rig standing by to be put to use in the new rig.
