1100T,X4 980 or BD (updated, one last question!)

Hi guys.

BF3's around the corner, I've got a second 6950 coming in, and would like to make sure I'm not going to get any bottlenecks. (I have a 990FXA-UD3). I just use my system for gaming and browsing. That's it. First off, will my 1055t bottleneck my GPU's in games?

Anyway, here are my options:

A-Keep 1055t (Bottlenecking?) and wait for Piledriver. It has 10% better performance per core as opposed to BD and has been confirmed to run on AM3+.

B- Get bulldozer FX8150 or FX8120 (which doesn't look very good for gaming) *I just bought an AM3+ mobo*

C- Get the 1100T/X4 980 (charts I've seen favor 980 for gaming) and later, upgrade to steamroller or excavator (do you think they'll run on AM3+ or a newer platform?) *I just bought an AM3+ mobo*

D- Other (please specify - don't say "go intel." I know the 2500K is the clear choice for gaming, but a new mobo is not an option right now).

Well BF3 is multi-threaded, so your current hexacore will do very well. I would recommend just keeping the 1055T until Piledriver, so option A seems the best to me. Perhaps overclock more (new cooler?) since you should be able to do 3.8ghz+ no problem.

This (probably), at the very least wait for retail to come out then go from there.

You'll have some problems in older less threaded games where having CF is going to make you feel like you just wasted $250, but other titles will run really well.

I have the same motherboard as you running F4 Bios and 2 EVGA GTX 580 SLI with a x4 965 and its not bottle necking at 1920x1200. I say Keep what you have I dont think it will bottleneck 2 6950s.

I cannot seem to get it past 3.5Ghz. I just doesn't handle extra voltage really well. I've spent hours and 3.5Ghz seems to be the stable limit for me. At 3.6Ghz, it needs 1.425v, and at 3.7Ghz it needs >1.475v and even then, after 2 hours of prime, it BSODed after about half an hour of BF3 beta. My FSB was 286 and 300 for those clocks and although that may seem high, those FSB settings ran everything flawlessly when my multiplier was lowered to a final CPU speed of 3.5Ghz.

I have a full am3 system ready to sell and all it needs is a processor. The option to just throw in the 1055t and sell the damn thing is super tempting. Say I really had to sell it, would you go BD or phenom?

That sucks If you did actually sell it I would go Phenom II again (specifically the 1100T/1090T, or maybe 960T since it has the possibility to unlock to hexacore, although not guaranteed). BD is terrible for games, it's going to bottleneck the crap out of you in many titles. One example where it shines is BF3 because it's very multi-threaded. Truth is the majority of games aren't like that and Bulldozer has slower IPC and horrible power consumption. There is really no point to buy it over Thuban, especially for games.

Example of how absolutely terrible Bulldozer is. So like I said in some games it will do okay, but games that don't take advantage of multithreading very much are going to take a massive, massive, massive hit in performance and bottleneck you so much it's not funny. Thuban will do much better for you in such games, and perform close enough to Bulldozer in BF3 and other multi-threaded games that it's not going to matter.

Fair enough. It's just so disappointing to all of us on the AMD side. The grass could not be greener on the other side.

I can't seem to find any hard comparisons between the X4 980 and the the 1100t/1090t. For some reason though, the X4 980 comes out one full tier higher than any of the X6 CPUs. What is the hierarchy chart based on?

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-g...w-32221-5.html

EDIT: This hierarchy is originally based on the average performance each CPU achieved in our charts test suite using only four game titles: Crysis, Unreal Tournament 3, World in Conflict, and Supreme Commander. We have since incorporated new game data into our criteria, but it should be known that any specific game title will likely perform differently depending on its unique programming. Some games, for example, will be severely graphics subsystem-limited, while others may react positively to more CPU cores, larger amounts of CPU cache, or even a specific architecture. We also did not have access to every CPU on the market, so some of the CPU performance estimates are based on the numbers similar architectures deliver. Indeed, this hierarchy chart is useful as a general guideline, but certainly not as a gospel one-size-fits-all perfect CPU comparison resource.

Do this mean with future games the X6 1100T or 1090T might switch places with the X4 980?

Thuban and Deneb (1100t/1090t and 970/980/whatever) are the exact same architecture, just Thuban has two more cores. So Thuban is always going to perform at least roughly the same or better (given the application is multithreaded) in games. Thuban also has a much better memory controller and generally overclocks a little better too, so it's really the way to go. I think Toms is basing that on price (e.g. 980 is slightly cheaper than 1100T that's why it's higher on the list even though they perform about equal) but I don't really know.

And yea, I'm really frustrated with AMD. My girlfriends PC has a GA-990XA-UD3 that was going to get a BD drop in, but obviously I'm not going to even bother with it. By no means am I a fanboy, I've owned more AMD than Intel but Nehalem and Sandy Bridge have lured me over to their platforms because of high performance.

I wouldn't say "problems." You may get less framerates in older, less threaded games, compared to a CPU with less, stronger cores, but it shouldn't put you into unplayable framerates.

Some games see mins in the teens, spending $500+ on video cards for those fps is "problems".

That's just my opinion though
