Cost Effective upgrades for an ailing system

Thread Starter
I've had portions of my ailing system since 2006, the last upgrade being in 2008. I am not a powerhouse user, my rig is primarily used as a light gaming machine (WoW, SC2). I would like too explore potential upgrade options I could persue to bring my rig to allow more acceptable gameplay for current gaming titles out now. I also figure that as my overclocking experience is limited, this would also serve as a good test bed to hone some skills. I would hope with an upgrade I can stretch the life of this system out another year (or so) and also leave me with a decent 2nd system in my home before I construct a completely new build. I assume going for a new CPU/GPU route would be my best bet to prolong its life. I would like to upgrade to a quad core and a dx11 capable card.

With that said, I would assume the upgrade limitations I would run into are dependent on my current Motherboard and Power Supply. My Gigabyte board says it will support the latest offerings of AM3 CPUs, however it only has a 3+1 phase rating. I am not sure how this would impact any overclocking hopes and normal operation for the 125W Phenom II quads (I assume poorly).

I am also unsure of how effective my powersupply will be with running higher end dx11 cards. I would like to hopefully upgrade my monitor with a good BF deal, but I may hold off if my power supply doesn't have the amps to power dx11 cards that will provide a significant increase over a 9800GT.

Any thoughts/comments on a path I can take to keep this rig chugging along a little while longer would be appreciated. Thanks!

Better CPU, at least I'd get the Athlon II x4 640 with the preferred choice being a Phenom II 1075T, I wouldn't overclock much though due to your motherboard. Gigabyte listing a CPU as supported, means it'll work at stock speeds safely.

Your PSU can handle any main-stream cards. I'd go for a 560Ti for physx support or a 6950 for slightly better fps without physx. These two cards are about the best price/performance right now for cards that'll run most games "respectably" (medium settings and about a 30fps minimum at 1080p).

Just make sure to download and update your Bios to F11 before you install a Phenom II or Athlon II chip, if it's not already.

The AthlonII x3 or x4 chip either one would be good...whichever fits your budget best. Plus, you could do some OCing with one of those.

Your really suggesting that a 6 core cpu is the preferred choice? His mobo employs an unheatsinked 3+ 1 vrm design. Probably not the best choice.

Sc2 and wow generally are happier with 2 fast cores than 4 slower cores. The i3 2100 @ 3.1ghz beats out the amd phenom ii x4 980 in sc2, iirc. Maybe grab an athlon II tri core, or one of the phenom ii x2's and overclock that. Pushing a quad or x6 on your motherboard, i wouldn't recommend.

That being said the 560ti is a great recommendation for your needs.

My note was minimal OC on the 6-core due to poor mobo, that's why I didn't just recommend the black edition.

GTX460 is the sweet spot for both of those games you are playing IMO. They are around $160 new right now.

Rana X3s are your best bet for value oriented gaming CPUs on the AMD side. If you want to OC, I suggest disabling core/s down to a dual core on your current mobo before tinkering.

I'm not sure what kind of budget you have, but if it were me, I would suggest just saving up till you can replace all 4 core components at the same time.

I know you are interested in overclocking, but in reality, SC2 and WOW will both run better on a non-overclocked i3-2100 than any AMD at any reasonable OC.

The very value oriented G840 pentium, at stock clocks, performs in WOW and SC2 on par with a phenom II clocked at 4GHZ. Also uses a fraction of the power and produces a fraction of the heat. You could get a G840, new mobo, 2x4GB DDR3 kit, and a GTX460 for about $330.
