Help me with my first build

Thread Starter
I need help with a new gaming rig and some good specs. I am considering for christmas getting myself a nice rig. My budget max is $1,400. Id like to keep it less tho.

Since the bulldozer seems to not be great Id like to keep it a 2500k.
As for GPU I would like to get a 580 depending on its price by Christmas. Unless convinced otherwise I dont mind AMD gpus either.

My other option is instead of building my rig I have considered ordering from Cyberpower or Ibuypower not sure how good those are tho they seem to be "Decent".

Please help with some Mobo , Ram , PSU , Cooling , HDD etc... My case Im going to keep it as the coolermaster haf X

I say do what makes you happy. There are pluses and minuses to building your own, but it is yours, no one else has that exact machine. As far as Ibuypower and Cyberpower, The three friends I have that have bought those have had many issues.

I would say for 1,400 dollars and a little time on amazon, pricewatch, and google, you can build one awesome rig!

Ive just built one. Got the HAF X love it! Good choice if you ask me but beware it is a monster of a case!

The i5 2500k is the one i went for too.. Didn;t see the need for the 2600k as I;m just using it for gaming.

PSU I would make sure you go for a modular setup as the one I got has a few spare wires that had to be stashed as not being used but the HAF X has plenty of room!

I went for 2 x HD 6950 2gb cards which I got for GBP310 which seems a good solid yet cheap way of getting good results!

Teh ASRock Extreme4 Gen3 Z68 mobo might be worth a look for you as its fairly cheap but a good board. I went for the ASRock fatal1ty Gen3 personally after reading reviews on alot of boards.

Gskill ripjaws X was suggested to me as good solid ram as was the corsair vengeance I went for.

Cooling - there were alot of different suggestions and I went for the Be Quiet DARK ROCK PRO c1 which was quite tricky to mount due to its size and weight but very quiet and keeping the temps right down. There are some quite good water cooling options dedicated just to the cpu. Get reading reviews and take your own pick.

Good luck with your build! I'm loving mine now it all got delivered and enjoyed building it all. Just need to get to grips with the overclocking side and tidy up in the case slightly.

All in All this cost me approx GBP1100 so you should be able to get well geared up for your spends!

+1 for the Modular PSU Dysheeki recommended. They are a lifesave, and clean the case up nicely!

What does modular mean exactly? Is it tricky to put a computer together?

The modular ones have all the cables seperate to the actual PSU so you can just use the cables you need not having them all there regardless of useage.
The ahrdest part for me was the cooler due to the size/bulk of it. apart from that its straight forward. I right enjoyed it, seeing it come together. then turning it on to find no picture showing on the monitor. after unpluging the gfx cards then trying again to see nothign. quick panic then realised I hadnt plugged a 12v cable into the mobo. Anyhow all in all pretty straight forward. It all depends on your technical ability and patience. Everyone is different.

Modular Active - Is when you plug the components into the PSU (more expensive)

Active - When everything is plugged in and you have a bunch of cables (less expensive)

Some suggestions for your build
Motherboard: ASRock Extreme 3,4 or Gigabyte ud4
Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws 2x4GB 1600
Psu: xfx 750w pro or Antec earthwatts 750w (both semi-modular)
Cooling: noctua d14 or silver arrow
hdd: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB

And if you have another computer running, you can look at a video on youtube when you feel kinda lost while building.

Asus Gene-Z mATX

core i5 K series

1 gig 570gtx

8 gigs ram (corsair)

that will take you right at 850-1000 bucks if you shop around. then choose atleast a 650 watt ps and a decent case
