Desktop/File Server hybrid: Ubuntu+mdadm? - Page 2

I have my workstation setup this way - a server desktop hybrid. I think it is good idea for home. I run my OS and everything else off of a 4x1TB mdadm raid5. Performance is acceptable for general use.

Runs 40W idle with a quad SB and onboard video.

How is the onboard video with SandyBridge for playback of HD content? I'm using a discrete card in my current AMD set-up because I got a noticeable amount of vertical tear when I tried the onboard (780G & 785G chipsets).

While it is resyncing on mine (8x2tb raid 6) my reads/writes are a little slow, at around 400MB/s instead of 500MB/s. The more you use it, the slower the rebuild, but it takes around 8-10 hours to add a drive to the array or rebuild a failed one. All drives are running off a $60 IBM BR10i i picked up off the bay.

I'm actually having issues with video tearing on SB but I'm certain it is a player or driver issue. I used to be able to play HD content without any issues on a E8400 and associated onboard video. HD2000 should be much more capable.
