Windows 7 File Sharing

Thread Starter
Hello. I am in need of some help to setup a small network sharing between PC1 and PC2. I had this before in XP where PC1 had a folder that PC2 could access and drag/drop. This is the same setup that I would like to have again if possible with maximum security.

When I edit anything in the Network and Sharing Center (in the advanced sharing connections) nothing actually saves. So if I go to Home or Work and turn on Network Discovery, and hit save it will be back to off when I open the screen again. Does this in "Public" as well.

I have edited some of my services which is where I believe the issue is. Based off blackvipers Windows 7 guide. I just wanted to disable stuff I never used....possible backfire here

By chance does anyone have some time and advice, id even appreciate a detailed guide that would show what needs to be enabled for it to work. Thank you very much.

I'll see if I can help.

Let me ask you first what systems you're on. Windows 7 on both or a mix of Windows 7 and XP?

Ok. On the computer that you want to have a folder shared, go to that folder in Windows Explorer. Then right-click the folder and go to 'Share'. Add 'Everyone' with checks as to what attributes you'd like available (read/write/etc).

Then, on the same machine go to 'Network' and then 'Network & Sharing'. Then on the bottom below the listed networks, click on 'Homegroup and Sharing'. Then click on 'Advanced Sharing'.

From there, you can make changes to password enabled sharing of folders, media, etc. If you can't find what you're looking for let me know.

After changing your options, the folders should be available on the network (and drag-and-drop capable). No restart or logon/off needed.

Let me know if this works for you!

That is my primary issue. I believe this is the section your referring to correct?

If so on password changing it says "windows cannot setup a homegroup on this computer" yet it says I am in a homegroup lol. I also cannot detect computers on my network either. I am however able to add folders to "share" but they don't appear on PC2.

Yes, see I don't use 'Homegroups'. You can, but I just don't. You want to find the options for file sharing without using 'Homegroups'.

That picture is what I'm referring to. You go to that page to adjust the sharing options for each network. However, I'm not sure it's available if you setup a Homegroup. I believe it should still be available because this is the way Windows 7 interacts with older networking options on XP and Vista.

( edit )

If you like I have time at the moment, I could help you via Skype/Teamviewer. If that's the route you'd like to go just PM me and we can do that route.

The screen you linked is the one that no matter what I do the options wont change. So for example I go to public and turn on network discovery and hit "save changes" then go back it will be on "off" again. It happens to every setting in the advanced options.

This is what originally made me think something in services was disabled that networking required.

Hrm, let me link you to a place where you can disable the 'Homegroup' and return to previous style networking. Just a moment, I'll find the link and edit this post.

( edit )

This is the link I used, also seems to be the first on a Google search coincidentally.

( edit2 )

I have to run but I'll be back in a while. Hopefully someone else will chime in with help as well.

Yeah I can disable it but I am not able to leave the homegroup I will read services closer as I believe the problem is there. If I try to start Homegroup in services I get a error - Windows could not start the homegroup provider service on local computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

*edit*
Found the problem and good to see that my hunch was right. I had
-Peer Networking Identity Manager
-Peer Name Resolution Protocol
-Peer Networking Grouping

Disabled. I set to automatic and now both computers are connected to my homegroup. If I got to homegroups on the left side however I do not see any users.
